Deimos

Deimos was once ready to leave the orbit of Mars, until anchors forced it back into place. An old martian myth says that the shape of its moons was caused by a giant, perhaps a god, pinching them between his fingers.

Author's Notes

The myth is a reference to Micromégas by Voltaire, a short story about a giant alien from the system of Sirius who visits our solar system. Voltaire correctly guessed that Mars had two moons in this story, and so a crater on Deimos was named after him.
