Authentic Adaptation
I'm standing here looking at you and I can't find you anymore. Do you understand that? You're right there and I can't find you.Authentic Adaptation is a condition exclusive to Shapeshifters in which an individual pushes their shifting ability beyond its typical limits, reshaping not only their outward appearance but their internal biology to match a taken form as convincingly as possible.
Symptoms
The condition develops gradually. Early stages present as increasing difficulty reverting to one's natural form. In more advanced cases, the ability to revert disappears entirely, which commonly leads to significant psychological distress as the permanent loss of one's original self being deeply significant within Shapeshifter culture. The condition also carries certain advantages that make it of practical use in the right circumstances. Those afflicted are undetectable as a Shapeshifter by scanners, blood tests, and physical examinations. It's also rumoured they are resistant to lethal doses of Destabilizing Injector.
Affected Groups
Outworlders are the group most susceptible to developing Authentic Adaptation. The nature of their work requires them to hold other forms for extended periods, and some develop strong attachments to the identities they have taken on, which can drive them to push further into adaptation rather than pulling back. The line between maintaining a useful cover and losing oneself in it is not always clear until it has already been crossed.
Treatment & Prevention
Early-stage cases are treated with psychological evaluation and a structured programme of reverting to the natural form. If caught in time, the condition can be managed and progression slowed or halted. For those in advanced stages, no curative option exists and therapy is used to help individuals come to terms with their situation.Prevention centres on regular form shifting and consistent returns to one's natural form. While most Shapeshifters do not feel the pull toward internal adaptation under ordinary circumstances, those in extended undercover work are encouraged to revert periodically as a matter of routine.

Cultural Reception
Authentic Adaptation is frowned upon in Shapeshifter culture. The inability to return to one's original form is seen as a voluntary severing of identity, something the species takes seriously. The idea of permanently losing a part of oneself in this way is unsettling to most Shapeshifters, regardless of the practical advantages it confers. Those who develop the condition tend to gravitate toward work as Outworlders, where their undetectability is an asset rather than a source of stigma, and where they are less likely to face the social discomfort that comes with being known to have it. Their usefulness in sensitive or covert operations is well recognised, even if the condition itself is not spoken of warmly.
Among other intergalactic species, Authentic Adaptation is virtually unknown.

Truly sounds like it could be a positive or negative condition depending on the point of view, especially in regards to altering one's external appearance. I liked that the focus of the article was how these two major groups of shapeshifters see it differently, and how it sets ground for bias (and ableism?). Given the description here and in the species article, sounds like mimicking another species internal look is more difficult and possibly would lead to worse problems when authentic adaption kicks in? I was also wondering: would a convincing change of their internal appearance mean a better chance at fooling medical exams if needed?
Yes, if a shapeshifter has progressed far enough then they'd be able to fool medical exams and scanning technology. There would probably more problems that come with authentic adaption, i feel like what that would exactly be would be dependant on what the shapeshifter has been shifting into. Thank you for taking the time to read this article too, it's appreciated, it's given me more things to think about :D
