Laey Farer

Background

Laey Lines are areas of concentrated Magic that connect 'Laey Points' (areas with high concentrations of ambient magic). Due to Laey Lines being areas of concentrated Magic (Dogma of Magic), it is common to experience geographical, natural or magical abnormalities, one abnormality is heightened Demons presence.

Demons are Magic controlling animals that are seen as highly unpredictable, skittish at best and dangerous at worst.

This is where Laey Farers come in, they are travelling nomads, Sherpa that assist people in crossing these hazardous Laey Lines.

History

Children stories tell of valiant wardens that keep evil at bay and protect humanity from the beasts of the night. Whilst true in some regard, there were once whole caravan of Laey Farer that traveled Ascana to guide and assist people during their travels.

Laey Farers aren't governed by an order or ruling council. They are nomadic warriors, shamans and travelers that would offer their services to others. Not all were combat trained, some repelling Demons peacefully, with herbal deterrents or scaring them off with elaborate costumes.

There is no single accepted way for a Laey Farer to perform their duty, the only through line being they are experts on Demons and their behavior, often stalking them to learn their patterns, habits and nesting grounds.

Living a nomadic lifestyle requires great knowledge of the land you inhabit. Laey Farers are master survivalists, able to live without the comforts of civilization for years. They are often associated with Druids for this fact.

Current Time

Laey Farer is a dying profession, now reduced to bygone folklore. There are not many left willing to dedicate themselves to this dangerous profession, and for so little recognition or profit. Laey Lines are still wildly unpredictable, but so is nature, they change and flow over time, and if you approach them with foresight and respect. You may pass through unscathed.

Unfortunately, there are some that use the lore of Laey Farers for personal gain. Robbing travels and leaving them for dead in dangerous situations. This has soured the perception of this once noble profession.

But some tales still persist, of Laey Farers that travel the Umber Wilds and the mountainous 'Divide', assisting migrating travelers that need protection.
