Väinämöinen
Väinämöinen is Thallaroth's oldest city and sits on an island in the delta of the Callista River . Most of Thallaroth's trade with the outside world comes through Väinämöinen's expansive port and the city has a reputation for producing seafarers who are a cut above the average. Due to the city's age, many strong colleges have built up a reputation here over the centuries, and many highly trained bards, warriors, and adventurers started their careers in this port city.
Demographics
Väinämöinen's population reflects Thallaroth as a whole. Whilst the majority of the population are human, dwarves make up the second largest group by race, followed by gnomes, elves, halflings, and Dragonborn.
The majority of Väinämöinen's human population are Waldemar, or Thallaroth natives, though given humans' tendencies to travel, other ethnicities are also common.
Government
Väinämöinen's city government is overseen by The Callista Court, currently led by High Lady Josephine Glenfellow. The rest of the 16 member council include some of the leader's of local merchant's guilds, and advisors from Väinämöinen's military and domestic departments.
Defences
Central Väinämöinen is surrounded by a wall of cut granite on all land bordered sides. The docks and other waterside areas of the city are protected by the outer harbour walls. On a wider scale, access to Väinämöinen's island is restricted to a small selection of bridges, making land access limited and easy to cut off if under siege.
Industry & Trade
Väinämöinen is Thallaroth's largest international trade hub and stays prosperous from taxes and levvies on many imported goods. Väinämöinen's location makes it a perfect fisheries port, and the land nearby is rich in minerals such as gold and bismuth. The Callista river also provides nutrients which make the surrounding land very fertile, producing agricultural goods such as pumpkins and huckleberries. Large numbers of merchants and traders can also be found, selling and buying goods to ships from foreign lands.
Infrastructure
Väinämöinen is home to Thallaroth's largest port and sees huge quantities of trade passing through. One significant part of this port is Vindhlér's Watch. The beacon at the top of this tower is a warming sight for sailor's navigating their way into Väinämöinen through the Callista delta.
Districts
Warden's Wharf
Warden's wharf is located in the north-east part of the city and is one of the busiest waterfront districts in Väinämöinen. Warden's wharf is primarily a trade and merchant district with warehouses and traders.Raven Docks
Raven docks is located just inside the city's western wall. A regular landing spot for local fishermen and home to several inns and taverns.Stone Quarter
Väinämöinen's stone quarter is a densely packed hub of craft workshops and tinkerers, largely due to it being home to many of the city's dwarven and gnomish population.Greatring Market
Greatring market sits near the eastern entrance to Väinämöinen and is a market district centered around an old stone circle.Castle Ward
Castle Ward is largely residential district and home to many governmental divisions.Black Piers
Making up the central section of Väinämöinen's waterfront, Black Piers is primarily a storage district for maritime trade, but also hosts a number of piers for smaller ships.Guilds and Factions

The Shiverscars: A group of reformed, 'civilised' orc fishermen.
My Eyes Are Down Here: A 'short race awareness group' based in the Stone Quarter.
The Windhunters: A maritime mercenary group, sailors for hire, merchant ship protection, etc.
Saltbound Knot: A merchant guild representing maritime trade.
The Platinum Mantle: A wealthy merchant guild representing the upper class of land based trade.
The Granite Dividers: An architect guild responsilbe for several of the city's most impressive structures.
