Actun-slime

The Substance

The substance was found in a cave by an Apothecary named Humberto long ago. They recorded, labelled and named the substance all in their own handwriting. At best, we can assume the name was "actun-slime" though it was many years before the Apothecary Guild decided to stop trying to decipher the text and just made it official (if, for no other reason than to get through paperwork more easily).
Many other studies have since then been done with actun-slime, and tried to match up what was found in the newer studies to the studies left by Apothecary Humberto. As such, the most well-known facts of actun-slime are:
  • it only grows in caves
  • it makes up approx. 15% of stalactites in the southern caves
  • it has a very mucus-like feel to touch
  • it attracts insects
  • insects stick to it
  • something easts the insects off the actun-slime

This last point is why the studies of actun-slime are continuing to this day. For no one has yet lived to see what east these insects and lived to tell the tale. Except for Humberto. Well, only long enough to write down what the eater of said insects was, but alas, this was written in the hardest to decipher handwriting to date.

The Users

Actun-slime can be chipped or scraped off stalactites in caves and brought back to the Apothecary Tower for apprentices to study. Proud will the Master be of an apprentice who manages to decipher the words of Apothecary Humberto.
In the meantime, the actun-slime can be processed into a large number of products, ranging from the tacky glue of sticky-notes to a number of harmful acids.
The more apprentices take on the work of studying actun-slime, the more uses can be found for it.
Yet Humberto's final words are still far, far out of reach.
