A server consists of a single crystalline cube-shaped container surrounded by insulation at absolute zero temperature.
It has a high density storage capacity for data reserved for containing millions of consciousness within a comparably small space. They encompass a greatly overengineered digital environment; with several physically distant modules connected via a secure pearl-built information network.

Participants

Only digital consciouses have the option to ditto. Rather than copy themselves, and incur the potential risks, they opt to mimic the closest approximation to the organic method of reproduction.
Ideally, two consciouses agree to merge by exchanging their original code self into a 'randomizer', where facets of each are shuffled, deactivated and recombined into one new personality.

The overall mental sturcture is left as intact as possible - so that the child maintains 'human' sensibilities for interaction with the rest of society. The consenting parents 'die' in this process.

Observance

Dittoing is mostly observed with eons-old thetíans who are fairly well off and with something substantial for their child to inherit. Conversely; those who are equally long lived, but possess little prospects, are the next demographic population to ditto. This instills the notion that one is either really rich or really poor to consider dittoing.

Both might be suicidally depressed from being trapped in gel for how ever long. And just want to pass the burden onto someone else who would know nothing else.
