Granted Magic
Granted magic describes any magic given to a practitioner by a more powerful being. Warlock magic, the most famous form of granted magic, is obtained via an intentional pact with a greater power to which the warlock is Beholden. The warlock's patron can easily revoke their magic if the pact is broken. Patrons typically retain a loose telepathic connection with their warlocks, and are capable of observing them or contacting them at any time.
A sorcerer's magic, in contrast, is granted either via birth circumstances (such as bloodline) or singular, extraordinary contact with a greater power. In the case of the latter, the granting power sometimes remains able to make continued contact with the Sorcerer—such as in the case of a wild magic curse given by a powerful Fey creature—but this contact is usually fleeting and one-way.
The holy magic of a cleric or paladin is also a type of granted magic, since it comes directly from the power of a god. This type of granted magic relies significantly less on direct communication between the recipient and the giver; wielders of holy magic, as a rule, speak to their gods far more than the reverse.
"There is a neediness to granted magic. It saps the network; it creates vulnerabilities. Benevolent gods may see fit to restore them responsibly; lesser immortals hungry for power will never do the world the same service." —Master Weaver Leilani, Order of the Nova, from the Conversation on the Zodiac Flux, 16 July
Most who obtain granted magic do not fully understand the terms of its granting. This is particularly the case when a warlock pact is offered under dire circumstances—such as in exchange for one's life—or in the case of sorcerers born into their powers. The constant flux of magical power between a user and their extraplanar patron warps the fabric of the ley network, and—in the case of lesser immortals or patrons otherwise bound to their plane—creates vulnerabilities through which a patron can potentially escape onto the Material Plane.
