Hedge-witchery
Most towns and villages have a resident hedge-witch. Depending on regional superstitions, they are a valued part of the community and are as likely to be your neighbour as the local baker or smithy, or they live on the outskirts of town and are given wide berth when they walk down the street.
Mystical Abilities
Hedge-witchery revolves around activation of dormant magic. Common practices of hedge-witches include spell-binding for talisman crafting and simple potion brewing. Folk come to witches for simple spells of fortune, health and luck. Common talismans protect against fire or storms, make the wearer more approachable, make a shop more inviting, improve crop yield or protect cattle from disease.
Apprenticeship
When a child or youngster shows themselves to be adept in the mystical arts to at least some extent, they can approach the local hedge-witch for an apprenticeship. Few apprentices are turned away, especially since hedge-witchery is a dying craft, people turning to sorcery and, worse, science, instead of a witch's knowledge.
Apprenticeships can last for a few to several years. Many apprentices travel the region a few years into their studies to learn from other hedge-witches and learn about the world. Some turn to sorcery, while many eventually return home to take over from their initial teacher when they pass away.
