Manomancer

At once it seems like they are piercing the fabric of our reality in two, but yet their flowing movements and keen awareness of the magical lines that make up existence creates a warm embrace around this place. I can only hope to understand the innate knowledge of this magic through intense study of the weaver of existence.
— Ancient text discussing Manomancers from before The Shatter
Manomancers are wizards who have become attuned to the magics of Manomancy, allowing them to adapt their magical casting using the various strings that make up the weave of magic. Wizards who practice Manomancy are sometimes called spellweavers, fatestitchers, or patternseers in different parts of the world.

Description

Taking hold of the strings of reality itself into their hands, Manomancers use an enhanced knowledge of somatic components of magic to draw upon the magical nature of the world to influence fate and arcana. Some Manomancers can use their body as an arcane focus and exert magical forces on other objects or areas.
While the aesthetics of magic use is unique to each spellcaster, most manomancers find themselves wielding a magical lines of energy, Some have claimed that these are the Leylines of the world, but they are motes of pure magical energy, solidified in the hands of a manomancer.

History

Before The Shatter

As with other specialities utilising Manomancy, the study of it started with a singular Chosen of The Weaver who was given the knowledge of the form of magic to inspire the mortals. For a time, the Chosen studied with a small sect of Wizards who became enamored with its complexity and forms.
Over the next 20 years, the art of becoming a Manomancer spread, with at least three known Archmages specializing in the school of magic, and many utilising the many different spells of the school within wider practice. At their peak, Manomancers were considered the height of magical potential alongside Kalemancers and Alkemancers. The wizards who studied the three component schools of magic were considered a core part of the construct of the Arvadian concepts of magic, believing that each other school of magic was built upon the three.
Manomancers became reknown for their innate connection with the pattern of existence, linking them quite closely with both Transmutation, Abjuration, and Divination wizards. However, while aspects of Manomancy were similar, the practices of Manomancers were recorded as being more intense.
Many Manomancers from this time seemed to develop The Sight, a form of divination that allows them to peer into the future with a slight element of prophecy. Some Manomancers even became full Oracles through their knowledge and study.

A Skill Lost

The Shatter was a devastating time for all people of the world, however it was cataclysmic for many different types of Wizards. Recognising their power and hubris, many of The Deceiver Gods targeted the floating cities of the realm and brought them low taking many different archmages along with them. Even where magic existed in the realm below, many wizards relied on their knowledge of the arcane which was in flux for many of the several centuries of the war.
Manomancers were particularly sought out by both sides of the war, with the death of The Weaver prior to the conflict, there was no persona convening over the idea of magic itself. While Thoura had taken up the concept of arcane magic, her followers were more skilled at the eight traditional schools of magic leading to many Manomancers becoming arcane outcasts or focusing on other forms of magic as a cover.
The Manomancers that were empowered as Oracles were slaughtered by Zeradoth, each imprisoned and executed for their prophetic visions. This led to an inset distrust of Manomancers due to the belief that their presence alone would put a person at risk of Zeradoth's bloodlust. It also led to many young mortals who found themselves bolstered in abilities related to Manomancy keeping their arcane knowledge a secret, either by themselves or under their guardian's guidance.
Before the third century of The Shatter, all of the Manomancers were wiped from the mortal plane, with the art form said to have died alongside the many who had converted to other schools of magic, and those who had disappeared through death or other means. At this point, the skills would languish in a state of disarray, with no new Manomancers appearing throughout the war, despite the draw of power to the path.

A Skill Found

In 434 AR the first set of texts based on Manomancy were discovered and wrote about both the ideas that helped form the Way of the Honed Spirit as well as an account of the practice of Manomancers. These initial findings were kept secret from many powerful Wizards, with most of the knowledge being hoarded by the Archani Conclave, keeping the knowledge secretive.
Despite knowledge of Manomancy being gained as early as 434 AR, it took until 703 AR for the first Manomancer to achieve a level of understanding of the craft to earn the title. Everys Haleton was a founding member of the Archani Conclave who desginated much of her research into learning more about Manomancy, despite being a well known Trasmuter before earning her title as Manomancer.
Over the next few decades, many pockets of practicioners of Manomancy have started to appear, with some having a natural leaning towards the arcane art. A few people have become publically acknowledged Manomancers, but over time the practice seems to have been kept even more secretive than before. Some believe that members of the Veritas Convention have been training an archmage to be a significantly powerful Manomancer.
At the same time, the prominence of texts that have been discovered about Manomancy have led some to seek out texts about both Kalemancy and Alkemancy, with the hope to develop an understanding of all three aspects of these magical schools.

Powers and Abilities

Altered Magics

Tier 1 Feature
Manomancers can forgo any verbal or simple material elements of a spell, as long as they can use their hands.
Additionally, they can alter some of the base aspects of a spell they are familiar with. Changing a fire based spell to ice, or increasing the range of the spell.

String of Fate

Tier 1 Feature
A Manomancer's link with fate begins at the start of their journey. Whenever a spell of theirs misses, they can use their knowledge of the weave of magic itself to change the outcome of the attack by a small amount potentially causing it to hit instead.

Tether and Bind

Tier 2 Feature
Using their knowledge of the strings of fate, a Manomancer can either bind or tether creatures together.
Bound creatures recieve a small arcane ward to their form while close to another bound creature, allowing them to take the brunt of damage that the other creature would take.
Tethered creatures are stopped from moving too far from each other, and damage that is dealt against one tethered creature expands across all of the tethered creatures.

The Patterns You Weave

Tier 3 Feature
Seeing the way that the patterns of the magical weave influence the world is pivotal to a Manomancer. At this point in their abilities, they can peek at the patterns of the weave and warn an ally, guiding them to strike more true with their next attack.

Empowered Arcanist

Tier 4 Feature
Taking in the power of the strings of magic, the body of the Manomancer becomes a crux of arcane power, allowing them to push the limits of magic itself. For a minute their form is empowered allowing them to cast spells quicker, alter magics of all spells they know to a certain point, and makes their magic more powerful and difficult to avoid.

Notable Manomancers

Name Pronouns Description
Everys Haleton She/Her Human Manomancer. Everrys was the first person to rediscover Manomancy as a school of magic in the modern day. She was known for being adept at the alteration of magic and combining Manomancy with Transmutation, but most of her Transmutation altered and added to the materials she used. She was known for funding some magical collectives until her death, in doing so she helped spread some of the ideas of Manomancy among a select number of wizards and archanists, this included becoming a founding member of the Archani Conclave.
Xerys Haleton She/Her Human Manomancer. Xerys was trained by her mother to become her successor, however she stepped into her own right, finding that her utilization of Manomancy was more focused on prophecy and altering existing magical spells and rituals. She used this knowledge to become a more public and known wizard among the realms, allowing her to further research into the study of Manomancy and looking for ways to enhance its abilities further.
Zyanth Tenothar He/Him Drakin Manomancer. Zyanth was a Manomancer during the Age of Creation who learned directly under the Chosen of The Weaver. In doing so, he developed into a powerful Oracle with powerful prophetic capabilities. THis allowed Zyanth to forsee the calamatous events of The Shatter in advance. Using this knowledge, he gathered his knowledge of the Age of Creation and the magic of the time and protected it all in a journal, protected by powerful arcane wards to ensure they would be found by a future generation that he saw surviving the divine war.
Vhaeryn They/Them Elf Manomancer. Vhaeryn was taught directly by the Chosen of The Weaver who acted as the progenitor of Manomancy. They were chosen for their unique skill in altering magic and using it partiuclarly to bind creatures together and bending the strings of existence to their whim. While the fate of Vhaeryn is unknown, several of their texts have been found over the last century allowing for a deeper understanding of the art of Manomancy in the modern day. Several of these texts were found in the wastes of Tokevis, seemingly connected to ancient ruijns in the region.
