Starshard

Don't tell this to anyone else but I actually prefer to look to a starshard ceiling over looking at the real night sky. There is just something deeply soothing about it.

Starshards are mysterious crystal that can be found in the Baidan Jungle. It is used as the main form of currency in Mofineron and functions as a beautiful lightsource. It is hard to come by outside of Mofineron as the Mofinians are not interested in trading it away.

Ancient Era

There are not many mentions of starshards in the ancient era when the Baidan Jungle was still under the control of the Dragons and Draconids. A theory for this is that the Draconids did not find it particularly important because it functions mostly as a lightsource.

The material must, however, have already been mined at that time because some of these starshards made it outside its region of origin through trade.

Mofineron

When the Mofae Elves took control over the region the use of starshards rose quickly as they found the soft blue and purple light it produces beautifully. For them it became a way to mimic a starlit sky even when indoors.

Eventually it was chosen to become a form of currency among the Mofae Elven clans of Mofineron.

Currency

Mofineans use starshards as a form of currency mostly because they see it as a much more beautiful material than gold or silver. Although barter used to be the most common method of trade among the Mofae Elves it quickly became diffucult to determine prices among the wide variety of clans in the Baidan Jungle. The starshards were used as a standard meseaure to determine the actual value of goods for trade.

Lighting

Starshards produce a soft blue and sometimes purplish light that is beautiful sight to see. When it is worked into a more flat form by using Earth Magic it can be altered to produce slight variations in intensity. When done correclty this give any ceiling covered in starshard the appearance of a night sky that slowly shifts in random directions.

Because the Mofae like to mimic nature in everything they do it has become a way to still get the feeling of looking up to the stars while being indoors.

Protection

Only the Mofae Elves know that the starshards can serve other purposes as well and this secret knowledge is also one of the reasons why they don't trade them away. After centuries of working with the materials they discovered other magical properties. Starshards can't be used in the same way as Falls to cast magic but they can still be used in a limited way.

In Mofineron there live quite a few Draconids who are practitioners of Death Magic. For this reason undead have come into contact with starshards from time to time. It is during one of these interactions that a protection property was discovered. When an undead walks under a ceiling covered in starshards it becomes passive and intrigued by the starshard. After several minutes all Death Magic that affected the undead is absorbed after which the undead falls to the ground and dissipates into a cloud of sparkling dust.
