Legend Tripping
Legend tripping is known everywhere in the universe where strange stories are told, but in Stenza culture it refers to a uniquely adolescent practice with deep spiritual significance and ties to Children's Mystery Cults.
History
Stenza legend tripping practices are thought to be descended from the same body of rituals that also led to the Citizenship Trial, although it is very apparent that they have existed in parallel to adult practices for quite some time. Most famously, hundreds of Greater Pass Stenza children poured into the Frozen Wastes during the Battle with the Stone Menace, led by adolescents among their number who knew the area due to treks into and around the local Caves of the Dead, and attempts to encounter the Snow Warrior and Pups. Following the Stenza's defeat of the Stone Menace, that same journey has been reenacted by generations of Greater Pass youths in ceremony and legend trip to this very day.
The kids said for generations, y'know, 'these are the bones of the first of us'. And the archaeologists went and looked at 'em and sure enough.... The kids are usually right, if they say somethin' is there I think it's the adults' responsibility to go check it out.
Execution
It's not like these places are always one hundred percent safe. They're not. Lots of 'em are just... directly through the nearest Pass into the steppes, which is completely unhinged no matter who you ask. But... there's never a 'don't tell me what I can't do' element to it. Like, it doesn't seem to be a dare or a challenge the way it is on Earth or somewhere.
The legend trip as demonstrated by adolescent Stenza is a very traditional and formal affair compared to counterpart practices in other parts of the universe. And while the precise customs vary from clan to clan and even within clan groups, generally the following pattern holds:
- Tales about a given location circulate and reach the ears of children (this is usually the only point of overlap between childhood religious and ritual expression and the wider adult community).
- Participants plan a voyage to the location, often on a significant date (including First Sunrise, Last Sunset, an anniversary of some kind, or before or after Migration). The dates and rituals (see subsequent steps) are held to be spiritually significant and may in fact be a form of seeking divine blessings or giving thanks.
- Participants make the journey, with whatever items they will need and any extra food and water the practical needs of the voyage requires. Often they do this alone, and certainly with minimal adult contact. However, if a pup accompanies them at any point, this is usually held as a good omen.
- At the location, the participants engage in the rituals dictated to them by the legends (in rare cases, legends do not specify any acts to be performed; in that case, known best practices apply, as covered in their religion classes). Stenza children do not respond to "dare" structures that occur in legends from other planets, and it seems to be widely understood that not only is provocation very rude, the entities the participants seek to contact (most commonly the Snow Warrior and Snow Pups) are favorable enough toward them that provocation is logically nonsensical.
- Following the completion of the ritual/s and the conclusion of the encounter (as applicable), the participants are free to leave. Flight is exceedingly rare, although not unheard of (and usually because something went very wrong; they tend to circulate as cautionary tales).
- After returning to their peers, participants recount what they have experienced. This may lead to a facial signifier (as is famously practiced in the Greater Pass region: youths and adults alike place pebbles on their faces in specific arrangements denoting the sort of entity they encountered (see: Testho)) or other indication granted by the group (as represented by an older adolescent) as recognition of the encounter.

This is a really fun ritual. I particularly like that adolescents are like 'the adults don't do this right'! XD
