Ashes, Echoes, and the Hag’s Last Laugh
The Heroes are:
Chiki - a Tortle Artificer with a extra planar space
Ghost - an Owlin Mistwalker with the powers of the spirits of the land
Ozzy - a Human Druid/Warlock, an old wiseman in service of Titania
Saruske - A greatape Monk that uses the way of shadows
They begin their journey at the teleportation circle inside the airship. In the distance, they can see the town of Loomlurch burning, and they make out two figures flying away to the north. The hag Skabatha Nightshade is riding a flying rocking horse, accompanied by someone who appears to be a guardsman, but who is actually the Changeling assassin Mae'lis.
They decide to ambush the hag and the Changeling assassin. Chiki jumps into the ball turret while Saruske takes control of the airship. Ozzy is ready to provide spell support.
Ghost transforms into his owl form and flies to the teleportation circle to scout the area. Using his special sight, he spots three sources of magic just inside the forest. He hears the telepathic voice of the Nightshade Hag, Skabatha, telling him to come and talk, but he rushes off instead.
They quickly overpower the hag, although Mae'lis falls to the ground, injured. She hobbles away.
The hag falls dead after her head is severed by Saruske and they harvest the following components from her body: They collect a bag of hag's hair, three vials of hag's blood, a pouch of hag's nails, and an intact hag's eyeball. They also collect a key stuck in her back, but without the hag, it has no power. They also retrieve 222 gold pieces.
A strange bug flies out of the Hag's corpse and introduces itself as Skabatha's reincarnated form. She tries to trick them, but they seal the bug in a glass jar and start to question her. She tells them that the hags benefit from the Boon of Immortality and cannot be killed permanently unless they are killed in a specific manner. The way to the realm of Yon lies through Nib's Cave and on into the Mines of Brigganock.
She tells them that Endelyn Moongrave's weakness is her superstitious nature, as well as an old prophecy that she will be killed during an eclipse. She has made her realm completely dark, without stars or the moon. However, she fears the prophecy so much that even a performance — a play, a musical, a song or an opera — featuring her getting killed during an eclipse would be enough to weaken her and kill her forever.
Next time: Will the party chase Mae’lis into the wilderness, or will they dare the depths of the Mines of Brigganock? And what of the eclipse—can they turn prophecy into a weapon? Only the shadows know.
