Light bearers

"You look better today."

"I am feeling better."

"What changed?"

"I am not sure. Yesterday I met a little boy and he gave me a cookie. It just lightened my day. I would love to thank him properly."

"So, what did he look like?"

"Not sure. He was about eight years old. Or no, maybe ten years? And he was about this tall. No, more like this. He had brown hair. Although it could have been blonde as well."

"I think I know who you are looking for."

"Really? Who, where can I find him?"

"At a temple of Cahaya. It was a light bearer you met. So thank Cahaya for her help."

— Conversation between two friends

That's a really delightful experience. I wonder why one person didn't realise what was happening, but the other did.

Lightbearers are spirits sent by Cahaya, Goddess of Light and Hope. They come to the heavy‑hearted, those weary, yet unbroken, and may take any form: a child at a corner, a cat on a sill, a butterfly that lingers, or a warmth that moves through the air. They do not speak in words. Their help is feeling, not message. Suddenly the cold is more bearable, the shoulders settle a little, the breath grows steady, and one remembers they were once loved. Those they touch rarely recall faces or features. Edges blur, time softens. What remains is that warmth, and a small widening of the world.

Cahaya sends them to whomever she deems most in need in that moment. And those who realize what has happened return to her temples to give thanks: a candle lit, a sweet left in the alms bowl, a bell chimed once, a ribbon tied at the gate, or a quiet “thank you” breathed into the doorway. The bearer cannot be sought, as the moment has already moved on. In their passing, the day becomes just bright enough to take the next step. And though the bearer is forgotten, the thanks remains. And with it, hope.

It's really great that the gestures of gratitude are at least as varied as the experiences with the light bearers themselves.
Cahaya does not heal the wounds. She warms the hands so we can bind them ourselves.
— As spoken by the Priesthood of Cahaya
What an appropriate expression!

I love this so much1 It's so heart-warming <3 One question for you: Are these spirits created from the goddess as they are or is this a kind of blessing (or rank) given to souls of her faithful - meaning someone can hope to become one? Beautiful idea, one that gives so much flavor to Cahaya!

Thank you so much for your comment and the question. Funny enough, I am currently writing about the afterlife and that those whos life is deemed worthy enough might become servants to one of the deities. So it would totally make sense if followers of Chaya might become light bearers. I don’t know why I didn’t thought of it myself. I will add this, as soon as the challenge is over.

What a lovely sentiment! Light bearers are seem like such soft, wonderful blessings for Cahaya.
