Ayda

The Ayda is a relatively new type of ship emerging in the eastern provinces of the Empire of Dercia, its a fast type of ship despite its size being nearly twice the size of some of the other ships that are currently in the Imperial Navy and are the first type to rely mainly on sail instead of a mixture of oars and sail.
One of the main developments that differentiates the Ayda from earlier ships in the Dercian Navy is the adoption of a full deck and the partial abandonment of the ram, as well as the adoption of lateen sails that are more common among ships around Ibraghian Theocracy.
Likewise, the Ayda represented a departure from ramming the enemy and a transition to a more ranged form of combat, followed by boarding actions once the enemy had been weakened enough.

Propulsion

The ship carries two lateen sails that are mounted at angled masts; the main mast amidships carries the largest sail, with the forward mast with a smaller sail. While the ship's main propulsion is the sails, it carries several oars for emergency propulsion on those occasions when the wind fails or the loss of a mast.

Weapons & Armament

The Ayda is armed with a heavy reinforced spur that is intended for smashing enemy oars, cripple their rudders, and punching through lighter hulls.
Spread along the deck, light ballistae are mounted, and racks with javelins and other throwing weapons are installed. Likewise, there are also hooks and grapnels intended for boarding actions. Some variations of the type are mounting ceramic fire-projectors for firing Dragons Fire , but these are rare due to the expense and danger; however, it's a terrifying weapon despite its short range.

Armor and defense

The hull is protected along the waterline by hardened pitch and leather, although some are moving to copper plating. Shields, both those of the marines and sailors, as well as extra shields, are hung along the rails to offer protection from arrows and other forms of incoming missiles.
Near the aft, the deck is covered with canvas to offer extra protection from arrows, but it also provides a nice protection from the sun.
