As the population of Grara has grown, the fae have retreated further into the wilderness. Only the little estants remain in the small villages in remote counties though in much smaller numbers than are still found in the small river hamlets across the mountains in Zinato.
The little fae probably preferred the sheltered regions of the river woods than the more open plains of Grara anyways. Still, it is always a joy to see one relaxing on a shelf or floating by the door to greet guests.— Takalia, Travels in Grara
In the Air
Estants are a variety of small
fae creatures that share a variety of traits. While each is still as unique as the next estants all have broad fin-like structures at the ends of the adorable little arms. Some have their fins fused together above their hands in a permanent sail. These fins can take the shape of leaves, butterfly wings, fish fins, or any number of other thin objects.
Each one is small enough to fit in the palm of a hand or a small cup. Their size seems proportional to the danger they pose as unlike many
fae which are known to be at odds with people - whether they have hostile intent or not - these cute little creatures are as harmless as they appear. They have the ability to emit light and the color of it depends on their emotional state.
They move by floating around on the air as if they weighed nothing at all. Even a gentle breeze is able to blow them around so they come out only on the rare occasion that the air is calm or they appear in places sheltered from the wind like dense forests and inside of homes.
In the Home
Homes are safe places for estants who can't be carried away against their will by the wind while inside so they often take up residence with people. This is incredibly unusual as most
fae are driven away by the presence of civilization. Still, as villages became towns and towns turned to cities, estants became a less common sight - the last confirmed sighting of an estant in
Darapur was well over a hundred years ago.
In the small communities up the snow-melt rivers of
Zinato estants are still a regular part of life. There is at least one in most homes and their presence - especially the presence of many in a single residence - is considered to be a sign of good fortune and is believed to protect the building and its residents from danger.

Great Little Exodus
No one knows why but sometimes estants gather in large numbers in open areas and wait for a wind of incredible force to carry them off to an unknown place.
This gathering is quite a sight to behold but also a warning to get indoors for the strongest of winds often carry powerful storms with them.
The strangest part is that while there will be no estants for a while after this, they do begin to appear again but no one knows how they get back.
"They say that only rude people and bad hosts have homes free of estants. I once went to Cirin's house and there were none, really affected my opinion of her.
Now, when I entered Seremsa's house, there were at least six of them there to greet me, floating there and glowing a gentle green. That's a house I would like to return to."— Errn, citizen of Irinpur
