Florear

The city of Florear is the residence of House Floreas, one of the four noble Houses of Aguilear. It is located on the south-western coast of the kingdom and is home to one of its most important harbours, second only to the great city of Mearia, and unlike Mearia, the northern half of which lies in Eleonis, it is not shared with another kingdom.

Florear is a thriving, wealthy harbour town, and it has built its reputation mostly on this, but it is also known for something else. Due to its rather exposed coastal location that is only protected by a few small islands, the city regularly falls victim to storms and floods. A system of dams and flood walls is in place to protect the city even from relatively strong storms, but some storms can not be stopped by human means.

Storm surges are a relatively common occurence in Florear, and the inhabitants of the city are quite prepared to deal with them. However, what is now known as the Great Surge of 1102 went far beyond what any community could have possibly prepared for. It dwarfed the storm defenses, levelled large parts of the city and took many lives. Florear was forced to rebuild from next to nothing.

The Great Surge was a destructive and traumatic day for Florear, but coastal people are resilient. Instead of giving up, Florear rallied and rebuilt the city to its former glory.

Whilst collective memory is still haunted by the Great Surge, its destructive force did lead to newer and better storm defenses being engineered.

A flood of this magnitude had never before been recorded and has not happened since. Still, Florear hopes to be better prepared for the next one.
