A Visitor's Guide to the City of Angeleor

Welcome, esteemed guest, to the City of Angeleor, home to the noble House Angeleos of the Plains! Whether you've been here before or not, let me introduce you to the city.

Angeleor is among the oldest settlements in all of Eleonis, and it is the second-largest, second only to Mearia. With its central location on the shores of the Vadion, the city is an important location for travel, trade and politics alike. Right now, we stand in the West Market, near the River Harbour. Our tour will come back around and end here, but for now let me show you the place where this fine city was founded.

Now, we've reached the southern shore of the mighty Vadion. Straight ahead, you can see the Castle Island, the island in the middle of the river where the ancestors of house Angeleos first settled. Over time, the castle has grown to encompass the whole island. Unfortunately, as it is the King's residence, we can't go inside without a specific purpose.

You may have already heard of the famous Riarcosbridge, which you can now see on your right hand side. It is one of three bridges connecting the South City, where we are now, with the North City, and the only one that also brings you to the castle. Originally, the bridge was constructed from wood, until authorities chose to replace it with the arched stone structure you see here today.

If you cross the Riarcosbridge, you get to the Riarcosbridge-Inn, which is doubtlessly the highlight of the North City. If you are looking for excellent food and lodging, the inn rivals the top inns in the South City, and it is significantly less expensive. Other than that, the North City offers hardly anything special. If you choose to go there, I have to warn you to keep an eye on your belongings at all times, as many poor people and thieves live up there.

So, I highly recommend the Riarcosbridge-Inn, but I have to advise caution if you plan on exploring the North City further. Now, let us continue our tour, shall we?

What you can see here, right by the south-eastern city wall, is the old Acadean Temple that was built here during the brief period in which the Empire spread all the way to the Plains. It is a relic from a time long before the five Lords of the Evening Isles, the Silver Mountains, Horn Valley, the Harbourlands and the Plains and the Western Silver Mountains came together to found the kingdom of Eleonis.

As you may know, people in this region have believed in the spirits of the Four Elements for millenia, and unlike in other parts of our lands, the people of what is now Eleonis kept the old gods for the most part. Some, however, did convert to the Faith of the Seven, and this old Temple is one of the places where they continue to practice their faith. Any visiting believers may also come here to pray.

Now, we've come to the Southern Gate, Angeleor's most prominent city gate and an important part of the city's defenses and helps keep our fine city safe from intruders. Its double gate house and inner yard make it very unusual as city gates go. The gate was built in a time when Eleonis was regularly at war with our southern neighbours and attacks from the south were fairly common.

Nowadays, Aguilear is a peaceful ally and the extra protection is no longer needed, but it was kept as a reminder of our past. Still, the gate is guarded day and night by the men and women of the City Watch, who are easily identified by their grey uniforms. You may have already noticed them patrolling the streets in small groups, assuring the safety of our streets.

Of the three branches of eleonian infantry found in Angeleor, visitors are most likely to encounter members of the City Watch. If you pass by the castle, you will most likely encounter the Castle Guard in their blue uniforms, tasked with keeping the castle grounds secure. Rarely, you will see a pair of men in black uniforms. They are knights of the King's Guard - pardon, the Royal Guard (a recent change, hence my confusion).

The Royal Guard consists of six knights who have the great honour of being charged with the protection of our King, who has two of them by his side at all times, making sure no harm comes to him. If you happen upon a pair of them, there is a chance that our King, Ionathar Angeleos, is nearby.

Coming through the inner Harbour Gate, we've now entered the River Harbour, the place where goods shipped to the city are distributed, and merchandise meant to continue east is transferred from the sailing vessels for sea travel onto the smaller river ships and vice versa. Thus, anything that is shipped from the silver sea to the lands up the Vadion or back comes through Angeleor and has to clear customs here.

This, amongst other things, has made Angeleor a large and wealthy city. In fact, a large portion of the people who live here are either soldiers or traders and merchants, or in some way affiliated with trade. Here in the River Harbour, wares are inspected, stored and transfered, but now let us go back into the city to see where Wares are sold and purchased

We've now returned to the West Market, one of three large markets in the south city, and arguably the most important one, as it is the closest to the River Harbour. While the South Market is where food and produce is predominantly sold, here in the West Market you can find many things from fabrics to useful items for house and yard to weapons to jewellery. If you're looking for the finest craftsmanship the Silver Sea region has to offer, the West Market is the place to be.

This is where I'll leave you to explore the city further. If you happen to get lost in the city, don't hesitate to ask anyone for the way, most Angeleans are more than happy to help. I wish you a good day and hope you will enjoy your stay in our fine city.

Thank you so much for your kind comment! It truly means a lot to me. I'm glad you liked this little (and rather incomplete) walking tour through the South City of Angeleor. I'm also very happy that you liked the map! I can't really take credit for the styling of the article, as I used one of the many lovely templates World Anvil has to offer.
