NPC's and Merchants
“What is a friend?
A single soul dwelling in two bodies.”
― Aristotle
NPCs in Gambit are in-game characters that you can interact with in order to learn background information about the world, themselves or your varied quests.
Many NPCs often range from the various vendors in the game who can be found in major settlements, but who can also be found in unmarked locations. There are also traveling merchants who can be found around the Realm, who never stay in one place for too long!
Most NPCs are designed to help progress the game narratively and provide exposition. Some are traditional, static NPCs with simple prompts for interaction. Others have a much more advanced, integrated AI system, which allows for them to be far more dynamic in their interactions with and around you. For these more advanced and unique NPCs, interaction can often affect the relationship you have with them. At certain relationship thresholds, you may even be granted access to other perks. No two NPC perks are alike, and your allowed three at a time, so find a combo you enjoy!
Many types of Merchants and Vendor's thrive throughout the Demon Realm, allowing for a varied selection of items and services to be traded, bought and sold.
General Merchants/Shopkeepers, often sell a variety of necessities (potions, basic armor) and buy junk/loot from the player.
Specialized Vendors, focus on specific gear types, such as blacksmiths for weapons, armorers for armor, or apothecaries for potions.
Quest/Information Brokers: Vendors who provide crucial quest items or hints for a cost.
"Come, See what I have for you"
Traveling Merchants/Nomads, are vendors who are non-playable characters (NPCs) who wander, appear sporadically, or move between different locations rather than staying in a fixed shop. In Gambit, these traveling, nomadic merchants, often take the form of a race of snake-like Demons; more specifically, they are part of a much larger, but nowadays largely scattered, persecuted clan found hidden away at many points of the game.
In game, they serve as specialized vendors, often providing unique, rare, or essential supplies that the player cannot find with static merchants. Because they are often located in dangerous areas or simply just appear only temporarily, players are often highly encouraged to explore thoroughly and use their wares to prepare for difficult encounters.
Another special variation of vendor NPC are what are known as Chatter-box Vendors. Chatter-box Vendors, is an unofficial title given to NPCs whose sole purpose is to simply indulge in the telling of Rumors to the player character. Rumors are a conversation topic accessed through a dialogue option. The person telling the rumor may reveal the location of a hidden place, may give information about a person that unlocks a quest, or may simply just give useless information.
This dialogue option is never affected by the character's disposition toward the player character and those who know rumors are often usually owners of businesses such as inns, and asking them whether they've heard any recent rumors can often trigger quests.
Some Chatter-box Vendors, may even ask for a small fee, to help them remember
