Session 35: Full Circle
General Summary
Tumbling through the door, Sparrow found herself in the laboratory's communal mess, with the room in a state of disarray. In the air lingered the stale aroma of decay, alongside faint traces of ash.
From within the sleeping quarters, the nervous figure of a young human man appeared, sword raised in a shaky grip. The man introduced himself as Ferrus Murus, a Junior Investigator of the Argentum Custodes: Silver Spires' law enforcement service.
Ferrus explained his arrival shortly prior to the crew, having been despatched by his superiors from the town of Glimmerbrook to investigate the loss of contact with the lab. After an initial surveying of the mess hall and panic room, Sparrow allowed Ferrus to lead the party through the crime scene, bringing them to the body of the head researcher, Dr. Valeria Livia.
Valeria had fallen to multiple blade wounds, her body lying on the floor of her upturned office, with a family portrait clutched in one hand; a portrait of herself, Dr. Hague, and a young, half-drow girl with rosy cheeks and a gap-toothed smile.
Continuing the investigation of the lab, the party found all areas of the facility had been ransacked, with nothing of any value remaining, and all research documents seemingly put to the torch.
The observatory was found in a state of carnage, with the mutated body of Dr. Hague sprawled across the floor, covered with knife wounds, with indications of a full-scale engagement with his attackers.
With her suspicions raised against the Stormbreakers pirates, and fear for the safety of Valeria and Jamison's daughter, Sparrow had the party return to the Twilight Endeavour to decide on their next course of action, bringing the head of Dr. Liva in the hope of the Dawnscythe's Keylenna V'ayne having access to a Speak With Dead spell.
Offering Ferrus passage out of the mountains, the young investigator joined the crew back on board the Endeavour, being met with cordial greetings, and offering up a traditional Silver Spires toast for their hospitality.
As Ferrus retired to the washroom the crew began to discuss their options, with the looming deadline to complete the Nexus Lab job, the imminent arrival of the Dawnscythe, and the potential threat to the researchers' daughter.
Sparrow reached out to Flynn, who informed her he had found Bryony, and asked him to make contact with Keylenna, seeking an update on the Dawnscythe's whereabouts.
As the afternoon wore on, the crew began to find themselves falling gravely ill, one by one slipping into a feverish state of unconsciousness.
With only Sparrow and Erebus seemingly fighting off the effects of this illness - along with a seemingly unaffected Fellen - Sparrow rushed back to her cabin to check on Ferrus, who had also been speaking of feelings of nausea.
Upon entering the cabin, Sparrow was faced with a disturbing sight: a figure in an almost perfect likeness of herself, putting the finishing touches to their disguise.
"Ferrus" admitted to Sparrow their true identity: an agent of the Iron Bastion by the operational name of Leftfield. They thanked Sparrow for the ease with which she let them onto the ship, and for the kindness of Erebus to leave them unsupervised after directing them towards the ship's water supply, now laced with Leftfield's poison. With the crew disposed of, they would be glad to salvage the ship for their superiors and - more importantly - the four Sundering Medallions in the crew's possession.
In desperation, Sparrow summoned forth Neifestra. While amused by the situation in general, the archfey traded barbs with the agent of the Iron Bastion: the antithesis of everything the fey realm stood for.
As Erebus arrived to face both Sparrows, Neifestra spun herself a hammock, sitting back to relax and watch the chaos unfold.
As Sparrow unleashed a Thunderwave on Leftfield, Erebus prepared to engage, as the crew in the infirmary began to gasp out their final breaths...
