Session 22: Friendly Fire
General Summary
Returning from the The Tome's Whisper, Sparrow and Flynn had a heart-to-heart about the events of the previous weeks, during which Flynn admitted to being overwhelmed by the news about Leon and loss of Tedric. As they were talking, he received a *Sending* from the arcanist Keylenna V'ayne, informing him that the Dawnscythe would keep Agga's sundering medallion safe, and he also told Sparrow of a reply he'd had from Lyra, confirming that The Mistress of the Maelstrom and Zephyra Stormweaver were the same person.
Meanwhile, Erebus spent some time in prayer to Mortis on behalf of Tedric, before attempting to show the new recruit, Vassama, the basics of knife work. The lesson didn't go quite as planned, with the young drow impaling herself on her own knife, before Erebus used his newly developing healing abilities to help repair the wound.
With the return of Sparrow and Flynn, the party met to discuss the job for The Tome's Whisper, Erebus' progress with the Crimson Eclipse, and the plan for heading Whisperward in search for the missing climber. A plan was made to tackle the scroll thief and scout the Spire's Light Bunkhouse before indulging the whole crew in a night at the local tavern, before setting out for the Wolf's Teeth mountains in the morning.
Erebus spoke to Thalun about Neifestra's Geas spell, learning that Azanes should have the ability to dispel the magic. The doctor was able to do so, but suffered some psychic backlash in the process, with Neifestra clearly expressing displeasure at circumventing her will.
Sparrow prepared a letter of condolence for Tedric's friends and family, visiting Thrifty Shades of Fey to deal with Neifestra once more, offering the return of the blood collected from her confrontation with the Queen of Air and Darkness, in exchange for delivering the note. Sensing the importance of the task, Neifestra negotiated further with Sparrow, eventually agreeing with the addition of an offering of blood from Vassama Khamin, and offering an item of Sparrow's choice from the store. Reluctantly agreeing, Sparrow accepted a map of Iridica, handing over a drop of Vassama's blood at Neifestra's request.
While there, Sparrow also asked Neifestra about who had taken out the contract on her uncle. The archfey was evasive, but suggested Sparrow ask "her future sister-in-law" Lyra about House Sianlaran, and the Night of Shattered Stars.
With Azanes in tow, Sparrow, Erebus and Flynn proceeded to the Skyfarer's Guildhall to finalise Sparrow's role as captain of the Endeavour, and learned that "the winged hall" they sought was most likely the Draconic Couriers Inc. depot.
Approaching the depot, Erebus encountered the kobold Wrick again, who helpfully directed the party to Horatio's house.
After deciphering the arcane lock on the front door, the party entered, with Erebus and Flynn becoming ensnared by Hold Person spells, and set upon by suits of animated armour seemingly left on guard. After defeating these guardians, Erebus found a trapdoor in a small worship room in front of a shrine to Nebulon.
Beneath the trapdoor, steps led down to a stone cellar, in which the young Horatio was completing his ascension ritual in front of an effigy of an eldritch being. As the ritual concluded, Horatio's form became horribly twisted and mutated, transforming into a hovering aberration before Erebus' eyes...
