Vharzi (Varr-zee)

On the flank, damn you, look to the flank! No bells sounded or banners raised. Vharzi! Vharzi! Keep the beasts moving!
— Final words of a Sarumaydi caravan-master, identity unknown

The Vharzi (Central Meluvrati: Dakaitee; Imperial Wythian: Brigand/Raider), also known by the men of Sarumayd as Ayyarun (Wythian: lit. "Vagabond") are itinerant marauders who inhabit the margins of Khwarrakh, subsisting primarily through plunder. Neither wholly nomadic nor settled, they move along caravan routes, hidden valleys, and isolated scrublands, where authority is weakest and movement is least constrained. Though often spoken of collectively, the Vharzi do not constitute a unified people, but rather a loose aggregation of bands, each bound by circumstance and led by bandit chieftains whose authority rests on the success of their raids.

The livelihood of a Vharzi marauder depends almost entirely on opportunistic raiding. Merchant caravans moving between the Daughters of Khwarrakh are frequent targets, especially where terrain narrows or water sources compel frequent and predictable routes. Remote villages and outlying pastoral encampments are likewise vulnerable. Vharzi bands favour speed and surprise over prolonged engagement, striking quickly and withdrawing before organized resistance can be mounted. Captured goods are either consumed, traded through intermediaries, or reintroduced into distant markets where their origins are less easily traced.

The composition of Vharzi bands is fluid. Some are formed from dispossessed herders or debtors driven from their lands; others are former retainers, deserters, or men drawn to a life unbound by the obligations of house and kin. Loyalty is personal rather than institutional, and bands may fragment or recombine with little warning should a band's chief be deemed weak or incompetent. Conflict among bands is not uncommon, particularly when resources are scarce.

Despite their reputation as outlaws, the Vharzi occupy a somewhat ambiguous position within the political landscape of Khwarrakh. In periods of heightened tension between the Daughters, it is not unusual for the noble houses to employ Vharzi bands as irregular auxiliaries, directing them against rival caravans, storehouses, or grazing territories. In this capacity, the Vharzi serve as instruments of deniable conflict, allowing the houses to exert pressure on their rivals without committing to open war, something heavily discouraged by their Lagonan masters. However, this relationship is neither stable nor entirely controlled. Bands once employed may later turn against their patrons, and the distinction between sanctioned raid and outright banditry is often a matter of circumstance. As a result, while the houses occasionally rely upon the Vharzi, they also devote considerable effort to suppressing them, escorting caravans with armed retainers and fortifying key routes and settlements.
