Retiring Characters

sometimes adventurers retire. whether because of old age, disability, love, or they simply got what they were after and don't feel the need to continue risking their life, these adventurers hang up their swords and settle down. they may even leave a legacy in the form of an heir or an apprentice who continues to adventure after them.

Retiring a Character

when a player decides to Retire their character, they don't lose all their progress. instead, they may choose a number of rewards with a total Retirement Cost not exceeding the amount of total EXP the retiring character has earned. these rewards reflect the ways in which the retiring character affects desired change in the world. they may build a school, start a farm, open a shop, donate to an organization, or any number of other achievements. see the table below.

Heirs And Apprentices

when a player retires their character they may choose to create an Heir or Apprentice of the retired character. the Heir or Apprentice is a 1st-level character who has been taught by or given items from the retired character. depending on the timing of the campaign, an Heir or Apprentice may not be immediately playable unless all the Player Characters decide to retire at the same time. a player of a retired character may temporarily play a different character until such time as their Heir or Apprentice is available to play.

an Heir or Apprentice starts the game at 1st level, but gains a free Talent and/or a free Heirloom that the retired character had. if the Heir or Apprentice has a Talent, it was taught to them by the retired character. if they have an Heirloom, that Heirloom is an item that belonged to the retired character but now belongs to the Heir or Apprentice. an Heir or Apprentice can only have one Legacy Talent and one Heirloom. they may have only a Legacy Talent or only an Heirloom, or they may have one of each.

an Heir or Apprentice carries the legacy of the retired character they are the Heir or Apprentice of. whenever they encounter an NPC or Monster who knew the retired character, there is a chance that they will be recognized as the Heir or Apprentice of the retired character by that NPC or Monster. this is determined with a Reputation check with an effective Reputation bonus of +5.
