Burning Sphere

Burning Sphere is an intermediate-level spell that summons a large fiery orb that moves at the caster's command. This spell is known to druids, sorcerers, and wizards. Arzet Devadov knows this spell.

This spell conjures a large fiery orb (within 60 feet) that occupies a 5-foot space and which can be moved 30 feet as a bonus action by the caster. This orb forces Dexterity saving throws from all that it strikes (success giving half damage). The orb can leap upwards 5 feet and forwards 10 feet. The orb conjures true fire, which spreads naturally and continues even after the spell dissipates; it also sheds bright light 20 feet and dim light 20 feet further. It lasts up to one minute, as long as the summoner's magical focus is not broken.

Burning Sphere is rather infamous as a classic spell for war mages. It is fairly well suited for disrupting formations of infantry or cavalry that are unaccustomed to battling mages - not only carving a burning path through enemy lines, but creating cascading disruptions that slow down and weaken enemy blocks. Soldiers trained against magic have ways of responding to this attack, but even then the Burning Sphere has considerable value in distraction and confusion. All of this to say that this spell is often associated with warfare and military strategy, and carries a certain sense of professional prestige with it - enough to disperse even a determined mass of rioting commoners.

The fire conjured by a burning sphere moves in a swirling empty globe and does not have physical weight.
