Humans are the most widespread and influential people of Oerth. Though they have the shortest lifespans of the common races, their adaptability, ambition, and social flexibility have allowed them to rise to prominence across the Flanaess. These traits also make them the most feared among the demihuman and humanoid races. Humans come in many varieties, each with its own history, culture, and traditions, yet all are considered part of the same race. Centuries of intermarriage have blended these groups, though many families still identify strongly with a particular heritage. A human PC can have whatever racial characteristics the DM allows.
Humans possess one significant advantage over other races: they may pursue any character class and advance to any level (if level limits are enforced). Other races face restrictions in these areas. Humans also tend to be more socially adaptable, readily forming alliances with elves, dwarves, halflings, and others.
Because of these traits, humans have founded and maintained many of the great realms of the world—kingdoms and empires that other races, due to their own cultural tendencies, might find difficult to govern.
Minimum/Maximum Ability Scores
All humans begin with ability scores ranging from 3 to 18 as shown on the Human Minimum/Maximum Ability Scores table to the left. Humans receive no racial ability score adjustments.
Humans do not possess infravision or ultravision.
Languages vary by culture; see each subrace article for recommended languages.
Height & Weight
All humans use the same height & weight table on the left, formatted as male/female.
Life Expectancy
Humans typically live around 100 years, assuming no misfortune. All human subraces use the same aging effects table.
Humans of the Flanaess
Nearly all humans of the Flanaess trace their ancestry to five major racial groups. A sixth, the Olman of the Amedio Jungle, exist primarily as slaves in the Hold of the Sea Princes and are not available as player characters.
Pure, unmixed human lineages are rare outside the fringes of the continent. In the central lands, centuries of migration and intermarriage have produced a blended population that has become the norm. Even so, many families maintain the customs, traditions, and identities of their primary ancestral group, regardless of how closely they resemble their forebears. Only the Rhennee avoid intermarriage with outsiders.
Skin color carries little social weight among most civilized peoples, though certain royal courts favor particular appearances. Each human group developed long ago in isolation, with its own culture, language, and pantheon of deities. In matters of trade, exploration, adventure, and war, these differences matter little.
All human groups share the same game statistics and abilities; they differ only in culture, appearance, and origin.
