Dragon Combat Infantry Unit
Composition
Manpower
A Dragon unit can field anywhere from 18 to 100 individual personnel, divided into 3 to 10 separate squads of 6-10 personnel each. This is a slight increase from the 8 squad, 80 personnel maximum of a standard combat unit, and reflects Alfa's confidence in the leadership abilities of their elite commanders. There are also recorded instances of combat units consisting of a single squad under its own command, though such instances are exceedingly rare - This type of role is typically filled by Dragon Recon Infantry Units instead.
Equipment
Combat units are outfitted with a variety of equipment depending on the specific requirements of each unit. Generally, however, every member of a combat unit is issued the standard combat gear:
- Assault Rifle
- Combat Vest with protective plating
- Ammunition for the rifle and sidearm
- Short-range squad radio
- Smoke grenades
- Night vision
- Combat Duty Uniform
- Sidearm/Pistol
- Personal first aid kit
- Fragmentation grenades
- Laser pointers
- Rations
This standard kit is typically overridden by the requirements of a specialty role. In addition, many Dragon personnel are granted far more leeway than normal in terms of deciding what extra equipment to carry or leave behind based on their own capabilities, experience, and knowledge of a coming operation.
Weaponry
Unlike standard combat infantry units which generally always field the current standard-issue rifle, the AR-32 Arrow Light Assault Rifle, Dragon units are permitted to carry the weaponry they feel are most fitting for their experience and upcoming operations. This has led to Dragon squads having a myriad of different weapons ranging from the current standard issue rifles and carbines, to older or specialized non-standard configurations. The only restriction to this freedom is the requirement that all rifles carried on a mission be capable of using the same magazines and bullets, with the exception of designated specialty roles such as marksman.
Vehicles
On certain deployments, Dragon units are equipped with basic land navigation vehicles for medium to long distance travel or, in some cases, the additional support of a mounted mobile weapon. These vehicles can be anything from buggies, to armored cars, to transport trucks. Other forms of transportation that required a dedicated or specialized crew are provided by Alfa's logistical units, such as APCs, IFVs, or aircraft.
Structure
Unit Structure
Similar the standard doctrine for Combat Infantry Units, Dragon units are traditionally a platoon consisting of a number of individual squads plus one command team that consists of a commander, sub-commander, and platoon-level support personnel.
Command Team Structure
The command team's troop assignments follow the same doctrine as most other infantry units. A commander and sub-commander hold leadership over the entire unit. The team also fields a dedicated long-range radio operator, a dedicated unit medic, and two to four shields. Command teams for larger units may also field a second unit medic (Generally referred to as the 'junior' medic) under the command of the 'senior' medic, as well as other specialty personnel that may be required depending on the unit's intended role such as drone technicians, demolitions experts, observers, etc. The command team typically ranges from 6 to 10 personnel.
Squad Structure
The individual squads themselves mimic standard doctrine, consisting of 6 to 10 personnel each, including the commander and sub-commander. Each combat squad traditionally fields a number of rifleman, alongside specialist roles as required by the unit commander. Specialty roles can include grenadiers, marksman, breachers, and autorifleman. These numbers bring the total manpower of a single Dragon unit to anywhere between 18 to 100 personnel.

History

Throughout the existence of Alfa as a military branch, Dragon Infantry Corps has existed as the UASF's elite infantry. These combat units have become well known and almost legendary throughout the Federation for their seemingly inhuman coordination and efficiency, honed through many many years of experience working within their specializations and with eachother. The Dragon doctrine of never separating a team of effective personnel has led to this perceived ability to communicate and act in tandem with as little as a single gesture or nod.
Some of the most notable feats performed by Dragon units include: The capture of the Sinnidad Station by Dragon 142 along the Solus border, where Delta and Foxtrot had failed twice before; An overwhelmingly effective flanking maneuver by Dragon 29 during the planet-side defense of New Sion against the initial Solus assault; And, most recently, the actions of Dragon 12 during the still classified Zavos Incident which saw the destruction of an exceedingly dangerous bioweapon being developed on Zavos VII.
