During the event known as Titania's Folly, many dwarves, orcs, giants and others overtook several key Way Point Stones . They made their way to the mortal realm, hell-bent on taking it over for the mage giant, Uzkor. Titania cast a spell that not only sealed the way points, but stopped the intrusion into the mortal realm by turning all of the invaders (a few others) into stone statues. The statues of the invaders were simply rough hewn stones that were frozen where they stood. Some others were actually turned into statues that appeared to be finely crafted by a master artist.
Those who have been stoned are often called 'stoners', and not in a good way. The term is usually derogatory and meant to refer to a person who made a huge mistake or something dumb they did against societal norms.
The spell itself was a last-ditch effort by Titania to prevent the invading forces from over taking the mortal realm. The areas of the Way Point Stones mostly affected were near Carnac in northwestern France in the mortal realm. These stones are orcs and dwarves in formation, ready to march into combat. Also affected were the Moai stones on Rapa Nui (Easter Island). The statues on Easter Island are actually an army of giants transformed into stone statues by Titania's spell. Other locations had similar disastrous results for the invaders. The other locations are scattered across the mortal realm and some have even been closed, though the magic of the way point remains. All of the attacked way point stones have been brought back under the control of the Fae Court.
The spell that Titania cast is the cause of the stoning. The statues, while not indestructible and can be broken or smashed, will reform into the being should the spell be broken or reversed. The spell was cast more than 3,000 years ago, though that time will vary depending on how the Way Point Stones bend the spell and time affecting it.
It is not hard to tell when someone is stoned. They are literally rock hard, turned into a pillar of stone or a rough carved statue. Some are even intricately carved statues, seemingly carved by a master craftsman.
There are few ways the stoned individuals can be returned to their natural state. None of them are easy or readily performable.
1. Reversing Titania's spell. Many mages have tried but have failed. They, for one reason or another wish to remove the spell and have been unable to do so.Whatever additives Titania used in her spell resist attempts to reverse or counter it.
2. Individually cast spells on affected stoners. A powerful enough mage can cast a reverse type spell on a stoner and possibly return them to their normal state. This has only been done twice by Oberon, consort to Titania and never by any other mages. The stoners were two simple villagers caught in the spell and returned to their families.
3. There is a legend that if the Miko's Stones can be found and the proper ritual performed, any one individual can be returned from stoner status. This has never been tried as the Miko's Stones are thought to be legends or myths.
4. Switcheroo. A stoner can be returned to normal if someone is willing to trade places with them. A non-stoner can become a stoner if the proper ritual is performed near the stoned person. The non-stoner will become a stone statue while the effected stoner will be freed and returned to normal. The individuals involved mist have similar life forces in strength, alignment and power.
5. There are other ways which have not yet been explored or tried.
When a stoner is no longer stoned, they return to the exact point they were stoned, not having aged. They will not know what happened around them while they were stoned and will be confused until the stoning is fully out of their system. They are often upset to find out those they loved are long dead and their great great grandchildren are the same age they are.
Most of those affected were those who wished to overtake the mortal realm through force. It is unknown what Titania named as her targets, but if it is discovered, it may aid in reversing the spell. Those not part of the invading force who were caught, willingly added their essence to the spell to help strengthen it. One of the stoners is the "Mother of Monsters," Echidna, the half-woman, half-serpent creature, mate to the giant Typhon of Greek Mythology. Several others were fey, in different states of personal transformation (Fairy or Human).
The only prevention is the cure. There has not been a stoning on the mass scale of Titania's Folly nor was there ever one in the history of either the Fae or the mortal realm.
There has only been one mass stoning, called Titania's Folly. The name is a slap to Titania, but the majority of the fae realm has turned it into a term or respect. There is no estimate as to how many stoners there are on the mortal realm. Interstingly enough, there are no stoners on the Fae realm side of the Way Point Stones .
For the most part, the Fae realm is thankful for the sacrifice Titania and others like Echidna made. Had the stoners been able to carry out their invasion, they may have been able to enslave the mortal realm then turn them against the fae realm, overtaking both for the forces of evil.
