Roselake

Roselake is a small, unimposing village situated on the Lake of Roses. It was founded by the wizard Oberon and became famous because it is the location he proposed to Titania and where they wed. Before he arrived, it was merely a small fishing village that survived by trading fish and other products the lake provided to nearby villages. They also had a small tourist business, taking people from other areas, including nobles from the Fae Court to 'secret' fishing spots.

After Oberon and Titania were married on the spot, they 'magically' blessed it as the home of love. Shortly after, strange things began to happen. People came from all over the Realm to proclaim love to each other, get married, or even find their soulmate. Love did indeed seem to be alive in Roselake.

Demographics

Before the marriage of Oberon and Titania at the waterfall, the population was quiet and unassuming, barely a hundred people, mostly human and half-elf. After the marriage, the village expanded to over 500 permanent residents and a constant flow of tourists and visitors. Many people still came for the amazing fishing, keeping the fishing industry active. But many instead came for the romance the town boasted. The population of the town is made up of humans (including Nords), half-elfs, halflings, and a handful of elves.

There is very little squabbling or crime, mostly coming from the visitors to the town. As there is no 'off season' for the town, the residents are constantly busy. When the cold hits, the fishing industry becomes an ice fishing business.

Government

The Town of Roselake is run by a mayor and a city council of 4. All positions are elected on a biennial basis, every other year. There are no term limits on any position. Local law enforcement is a sheriff and 2 deputies, also elected, but held every year.

Defences

The town has a sheriff and two deputies who maintain law and order. But should the town come under attack, it relies on its people to come together in a type of volunteer militia.

Industry & Trade

The main industry of the town is love. People come to Roselake to find or affirm love or to experience love for the first time. Marriage, reaffirmations, and all things associated with a love vacation.

Districts

While there are no official 'districts', most of the town is devoted to the business of love. A small section in the south of town is where the fishing docks and stores are. Tourists can rent a boat, an fully equipped boat, or a fully equipped boat with a guide and helper. There are also cabins dedicated to the fishing industry. No longer does the town provide fish to other towns like it used to, instead specializing in the tourism and the occasional crafter.

The main part of the town is living quarters for the 500 people who live and work there. Many of the houses are utilitarian in nature as a throwback to the origins of the settlement. But it has not stopped business from being decorative, some to the point of being over-the-top gaudy. Many of the residents have a small one or two story home with a small yard. Many devote half of their yard to a personal garden, sometimes selling extra or specialty vegetables to the restaurants in the "love district".

The main business in town is the largest. It takes up the north and west areas of the town. Inns, restaurants, tailors, florists, musicians, clergy, and even artists cater to those coming to experience love in it many splendid forms. Inns are divided into couples looking to prove their love, get married, or as a honeymoon or vacation. The prices of the hotels and restaurants are a little high, but many are willing to pay it to receive the blessings that Oberon and Titania left on the town.

The city hall and sheriff office/jail (civic center) are situated on the convergence of the three districts, on the western side of the town. One of the most important features of the civic center is the information desk and the Oberon/Titania museum of Love. It details the history of the town through artistic representations and historic artifacts.

One little-known building located on the border of the love and fishing 'districts' is Lily's Flower House of Love or simply Lily's. It is a place where the lonely can truly find love, if only by the hour, or the night, if you are willing to pay. Some would call it a house of ill-repute or brothel. Others call it home.

The town of Roselake has a very active Fisherman's guild.

Points of interest

First and foremost is Love's Waterfall. It is a small, gentle-flowing 20-foot waterfall that never seems to freeze. it is where Oberon proposed to Titania and they were subsequently married at the top of the waterfall. Many use it for similar reasons, proposing or having their nuptial ceremonies. Many couples come to Roselake to affirm or even reaffirm their love. They do so by taking advantage of the magic Titania and Oberon were said to leave behind when they blessed Roselake. It is said that if a couple goes to the top of Love's Waterfall and together toss a red rose over the waterfall, their future can be determined.

They are given a red rose with a marker specific to them. They then toss the roses over the fall together. The next day they return. If the rose is not there, their relationship has been blessed. If it has returned, there are issues they need to work out. There are many 'love counselors' in Roselake eager to help couples figure out their issues. It is also said if someone sleeps hear the base of the waterfall, they will dream of their partner. Many people have sworn they saw their partner in their dreams after sleeping by the waterfall's base.

Tourism

Love and fishing dominate the tourism industry in Roselake. There is also fine camping on the lake's edge and some sports during the cold, short winters.

Architecture

Much of the residences and the fishing area are utilitarian in nature, kept as they were before Oberon's arrival. They have been little changed since his proposal to Titania. The inns and restaurants are more brightly decorated, meant to attract business and catch the eye of tourists in love.
The south of the town is dedicated to fishing and has a definitively different look than the rest of the town. The inns here are smaller and often utilitarian nature as well. Many of the shops here are dedicated to the fishing industry, having changed from large scale fishing to 'fishing adventures' for tourists and visiting nobles.

Geography

Roselake is situated on the eastern-most tip of the Lake of Roses. It is a tight-packed village save for where the inns and restaurants are located.

Of special note is Love's Waterfall, a simple 20 foot waterfall where Oberon is said to have proposed to Titania, she accepted and they were wed at. They gave the waterfall their blessing, making sure all who came to the waterfall had a chance to find true love.

Climate

The climate of Roselake is temperate. The spring and summer months are longer due to the lake effect, but this also means the winter months are more harsh, often 'stranding' visitors for a week at a time. Locals often refer to these heavy snow times as a visit from Aunt In-Flow.

Natural Resources

Roselake used to be a major fishing town until Oberon and Titania visited. Now they 'export' love. Many people come to Roselake to find love or get married. Fishing is still important, but more as a tourist attraction for relaxing fishing excursions or fishing for fish that only live in Roselake, such as Rose Trout, Speckled Love Perch, and Iron Rock Gliders. The last of those are prized by crafters who use the skeleton of the large fish to create many different things, such as works of art, fancy tools, or specialized weapons.
