True Names
The nature of True Names is a complicated and mostly theoretical subject. Names have always had power, particularly in relation to Magic, and the Divine.
It is believed that merely speaking the name of a God invokes them and garners their attention, allowing the Deity to identify and even listen in to the invoker's conversation. There are also multiple Spell that require the name of the subject in order to target them with the incantation or ritual. These Spells often fail if a false name is spoken as part of the casting, with only the primary name the target identifies with working for the Magic. Some powerful figures and entities have been known to hide their names, going by aliases and pseudonyms in order to avoid such Magic.
Many scholars, as far back as the Silver Age, have also speculated that all things have a true, metaphysical name, an identifying marker beyond language that perfectly describes the nature of it's subject. With some scholars have gone further and argued that the language of Magic, the incantations used in the casting of Spells, is the true language of all things, with Magic requiring the True Names of objects to function. Select ancient scholars even theorised that a creature's True Name could give you power over them.
But the subject is still theoretical, with little to no evidence supporting any such claims.
