Revenants

Revenants, sometimes called Reborn or Hollow Ones, are Undead, individuals who died, usually in a cruel or painful way, and yet somehow, still live. Revenants are not born naturally, they are instead the reanimation of another species. 

Revenants exist in a place between life and death, they are creatures touched by Undeath, the dead risen from the grave. But unlike mindless zombies or skeletons, Revenants are sentient, largely maintaining their Soul and sense of self. They are able to recall who they were in life, but often with some partial memory loss.

The dead can find themselves risen as Revenants in a variety of ways, the most often cause is a desire from revenge. When a Mortal is killed, if they desire revenge on their killer with such passion, their Soul may refuses to leave their body, refusing the call of the Afterlife, and instead rise again. These Revenant are usually solely focused on revenge, pursuing nothing but vengeance, allowing nothing or no-one to get in their way, not even death, as they will just rise and rise again until their task is done or their desire for revenge has been quelled. Only then will the Revenant lay to rest.

Revenants can also be risen by powerful dark Magic, or even through divine command, either to serve a cause or to accomplish a task, only to be dismissed once their task is done. Revenants can also be risen through strange experiments practiced on corpses.

Because of their Undead nature, Revenants gain a variety of supernatural abilities, they do not need to sleep, eat, drink or breathe, and they are incredibly difficult to kill. Many reside within the Mortal world until their task is done, while others are forced to persist eternally, continually searching for their peace in death.

Revenants are usually feared, shunned and even hunted because of their undead nature and their often terrifying appearance. Some have been known to disguise themselves, while others, so driven by revenge or their task, care not for disguises, often leading to unnecessary bloodshed.

Appearance

Revenants usually resemble their origin species, but marked by the scars of their fatal ends, with ashen, pale skin, open, bloodless wounds, or protruding bone, clear signs that they’ve been touched by death.

Revenants may also appear as unnatural constructs, beings stitched together from disparate others or even as a mysterious mind trapped in control of a manufactured body.

Maturity

Revenants do not age, they are permanently trapped in a state of undeath.

Revenants are usually infertile and can not reproduce.
