Their abilities however pale in comparison to those of the people they are charged to protect. This of course changes as soon as they leave the magic zone.

History

The Royal Guard is one of the longest-serving regiments and dates to the 12th century. In its 800-year history, it has served 37 kings and queens.

In the first few centuries, its members comprised the best warriors, as chosen during tournaments. Those chosen would also be granted lands in the magic zone.

During the Medieval period, it saw action frequently as Cendliand struggled to hold on to non-magical territory that it desperately needed from its nearest neighbours, Alucia and Lunyth. Both countries were hungry for control of a piece of the wild magic that a thousand years before had floated freely across their territories, although in far weaker strengths.

As military technologies improved with firearms in the non magical counties in the 15th, 16, and 17th centuries Cendliand found its self on the back foot in several wars and the Royal guard took on a more ceremonial role as monarchs and princes shied away from battles on account of the growing accuracy of guns. Preferring a war room to a battlefield. Early in this period, several monarchs were lost in battle due to the new weaponry.

The last monarch to go into battle was King Mathia Gressa . Before he became king, he had been an ordinary foot soldier. With his background, he turned the disgraced royal guard around, although they still bore the shame of letting his Queen Phyllis Craeve predecessor die.
