Eccentrics

The Eccentrics believe that any profession that needs magic is a man’s profession.

Due to the danger to the lives of both mother and baby, Cendliand has a policy restricting access to magic to pregnant mothers and children under the age of 11. This law is strictly enforced, even extending to pregnant queens and young royal children.

There are some exceptions, but that person has to be accompanied by a Prince/Princess of the Sword, understanding that the Prince can use their magic to override any accidental use. The most common reason for granting an exception is for children so that they may receive specialist medical treatment only available in Dragonsfell.

As a result of this law, there is a large underground society called Eccentrics that believes that women should not use magic at all. If a member of this group has a daughter, they attempt to subvert the law, insisting that every child should learn from the age of 11 how to control their innate magical abilities when and if they should have access to wild magic.

There are several methods employed to achieve this aim, most notably taking the girl out of school repeatedly for appointments or claiming that she is sick on the days of the lessons. Another is to falsify magic exam results by having their daughter tested at a non-approved test centre where they may do the written portion of the exam but not the practical aspect.

The government has responded with fines. But they have not acted as a deterrent and have gained backlash from parents of homeschooled children and those with special educational requirements and medical complications. Frequently, authorities issue fines to the woman whose education was tampered with rather than the parent who did the restricting. This only fosters ill feelings toward the system and perpetuates the cycle, as the fines are high and include an order to retake the examination in full.
