Sleep

Oh, my young mages we’re learning the Sleep spell today, and I can already see some of you look like you’re under its effects without me casting a thing. Remarkable. I must be more powerful than I thought able to put students to sleep without an incantation or even a drop of mana.   Now wake up. You’ll need your attention for this one.   Sleep allows you to lull living creatures into magical slumber. It isn’t a powerful spell, so consider this your warning: it only works reliably on weaker targets. Creatures with strong wills, hardened minds, or powerful auras are far less likely to be affected and even when it works, it won’t knock out large groups of hardened foes.   But against the average bandit, goblin, or wolf? Very effective. It can turn a dangerous situation into a manageable one quickly. And no we are not suggesting you use it on guards. Many are trained to recognize enchantment effects, and they build resistance to them as part of their duty.   Now, I know what some of you are thinking: “Could this be a sleep aid?” Yes, technically it can. But if you need to use this spell more than once or twice just to get through the night, or if you’re using it regularly on yourself or your friends, then you don’t need more magic you need medical attention. That kind of restlessness usually means something deeper is wrong, and you are not meant to become someone’s nightly spell-based crutch.   Use it once in a while after an unusually stressful day, or when someone is so anxious they can’t calm down fine. But if it becomes a habit, get help. And remember: most of you are not healers. So use the spell responsibly, and do not make yourself or anyone else dependent on it.

Effect

A sleep spell causes a magical slumber to come upon 4 HD of creatures. Creatures with the fewest HD are affected first. Among creatures with equal HD, those who are closest to the spell's point of origin are affected first. HD that are not sufficient to affect a creature are wasted. Sleeping creatures are helpless. Slapping or wounding awakens an affected creature, but normal noise does not. Awakening a creature is a standard action (an application of the aid another action). Sleep does not target unconscious creatures, constructs, or undead creatures.

Gestures & Ritual
Speak the incantation softly, then yawn into your hand as if catching the breath itself. Close your fingers briefly, holding the spell’s drowsy thread inside your palm. Then open your hand toward the target and exhale gently releasing the magic like a fine drift of dream-dust.
