Shield
Shield is one of the best early defensive spells you can learn, and nearly anyone can master it. The spell relies only on your spirit or will energy you do not need to understand the other six elements or their sub-elements to use it. By shaping this energy, you create a sturdy disk of force that floats before you, protecting you even from certain magical attacks.
However, remember your limits. In your early training, the shield will not last long. Preparation is essential you do not want to find yourself without your defenses when facing monsters, bandits, or worse.
There is also a more advanced form of this magic: Shield Companion. This spell is meant for mages who maintain a soul-bound companion, such as a familiar, animal companion, or similar bonded creature. Shield Companion allows you to protect them by redirecting harm to yourself. It is a more demanding spell and should only be attempted after you have mastered Shield. By the time you learn it properly, you will also have the control needed to sustain it for longer periods, ensuring your companion’s safety.
Both spells provide defensive benefits, but Shield Companion carries a greater responsibility. It may save your companion’s life, but remember this: you are just as valuable as they are. If you fall, your companion will likely be left helpless as well.
So use wisdom, timing, and tactics when employing these spells, my young mages. Defense is not about standing still it is about surviving to fight another day.
Effect
Shield creates an invisible barrier of force that hovers in front of you. This shield negates all magic missile attacks directed at you and grants a +4 shield bonus to AC. Because it is a force effect, this bonus also applies against incorporeal touch attacks. The shield imposes no armor check penalty and no chance of arcane spell failure
Natural Magic
If you select this spell as one of your natural magics, its duration increases by 1 additional minute per level. Instead of lasting 1 minute per level, the spell lasts 2 minutes per level.Side/Secondary Effects
Companion Shield (or Shielded Bond)
This spell creates a special mystical bond between you and a companion creature such as an animal companion, bonded mount, eidolon, or familiar allowing you to take its wounds upon yourself.
While the spell is active, the companion gains a +1 deflection bonus to AC and a +1 resistance bonus on saving throws. As an immediate action, when your companion takes hit point damage, you may transfer that damage to yourself, preventing the companion from being harmed. This functions similarly to shield other, except that the damage is not split between you and the target.
Only effects that deal hit point damage may be transferred in this way. Effects that do not involve the loss of hit points such as charm effects, temporary ability damage, level drain, or death effects are not affected. Additionally, if the companion loses hit points due to a reduction in Constitution score, you cannot take that damage on its behalf, as it is not considered direct hit point damage.
Saving Throw:None / Shield Companion Will negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: None / Shield Companion yes (harmless)
Gestures & Ritual
You draw energy into your arm, then in a swift, controlled motion thrust it forward, sweep it upward, and pull it back toward the center of your body. As the motion completes, the invisible shield forms before you.
