Line in the Sand

Welcome, my combat casters. Today we’re covering a very useful spell called Line in the Sand and yes, you’ll finally learn why there are so many stories about “drawing a line” and what the idea really means beyond simply standing your ground.   With this spell, you draw a magical line across the ground. If an opponent crosses that line, your body triggers the stored energy and responds with sudden speed and force allowing you to move and strike faster for a brief burst, as if the line itself gave you permission to act.   Most people can trigger this effect two or three times before the energy is spent. Those with stronger training and better control can push it to three, four, or even more but that depends on discipline, not ego.   Yes, the spell is mostly used for combat. But I’ve heard one “unique” use from a friend’s wife. Her sons wanted cookies. Instead of simply saying no, she told them: If you can get past this line, you can have the cookies but you have to do it without me touching you.   The boys charged. They tried to rush all at once. Unfortunately for them, they weren’t coordinated, they weren’t the same speed, and the spell helped their mother move fast enough to swat every one of them before they got through. They did not get their cookies.   So yes there are ways to use it outside of combat. But make no mistake: this is a combat spell. Use it wisely. And remember if no one crosses the line, the magic will not help you.

Effect

You create a glowing crimson line around the area. Against creatures in the area, you can attempt a number of additional attacks of opportunity per round equal to your spellcasting ability score modifier (Intelligence for magi and wizards, Charisma for bloodragers and sorcerers). The spell does not allow you to make more than one attack against a creature for each action it takes that provokes such attacks.
Gestures & Ritual
Choose the point you’ll use to anchor the line your fingertip, the tip of a weapon, your focus tool, or even your heel. As you speak the incantation, trace a short sigil to “prime” the magic, then draw a clean line across the ground where you want the boundary to be.
