Auditory Hallucination

Auditory Hallucinations   All right, my young mages today we’re going to learn how to trick the ear. The spell is called Auditory Hallucinations.   With this spell, you can make a target believe they heard nearly anything you can imagine: footsteps in an empty hall, a whisper behind the shoulder, a scream down the corridor, the growl of a monster that isn’t there, or even a familiar voice calling their name as long as you have a general idea of what that voice would sound like.   Used carelessly, this spell is the sort that gets people into trouble… and then makes the trouble worse. Illusion magic is heavily regulated in many places for a reason. But used responsibly, it can be an excellent tool for protecting others: pulling a guard away from an innocent target, distracting an enemy long enough to escape, or scaring off beasts by making them believe something bigger is nearby.   As with any illusion, timing and believability matter especially against intelligent creatures. A sloppy sound, an unrealistic source, or a poorly chosen moment can give you away. And if you use it on guards or officials and they figure it out, you may discover just how quickly “a clever trick” becomes jail time.   So be smart. Be believable. And use it wisely.

Effect

You cause the targets to believe they hear any sound you imagine.   The sound can include intelligible speech. Instead of precisely imagining a sound, you can identify a sound the subjects know and they imagine it doing what you describe as you cast the spell. For example, you could cast this spell on orc warriors and have them imagine the sound of their chieftain calling for help, even if you’ve never heard their chieftain and even if the chieftain speaks in a language you don’t understand. All targets hear the same hallucination. You can change the sound as part of concentrating on the spell.
