This spell is used by the priest to remove the burden of unwilling or unknown deeds from the person who is the subject of the atonement. The spell removes the effects of magical alignment changes as well. The person seeking the atonement spell must either be truly repentant or not have been in command of his own will when the acts to be atoned for were committed. The DM will judge this spell in this regard, noting any past instances of its use upon the person. Deliberate misdeeds and acts of knowing and willful nature cannot be atoned for with this spell (see the quest spell). A character who refuses to accept an atonement is automatically considered to have committed a willful misdeed. The priest needs his religious symbol, prayer beads or wheel or book, and burningincense.
This spell is used to offer the forgiveness of one's deity to those who have strayed from the path unwillingly or unknowingly. The target seeking the atonement must either be truly repentant or not have been in command of his or her own will when the acts to be atoned for were committed. In the case of a creature atoning for deliberate misdeeds and acts of a knowing and willful nature, you must intercede with your deity in order to expunge the target's burden at cost to yourself. In such a case, some of the material components for this spell are consumed, and you gain four levels of Exhaustion when you complete the casting. Many casters first assign a target of this some sort of quest or similar penance to determine whether the creature is truly contrite before casting the atonement spell on its behalf.
Atonement may be cast for one of several purposes, depending on the version selected.
Reverse Magical Alignment Change
If a creature has had its alignment magically changed, atonement returns its alignment to its original status at no cost.Restore Class
A paladin who has lost his or her class features due to committing an off-alignment act may have his or her paladinhood restored to him or her by this spell cast by another cleric or paladin of the same deity.Restore Cleric or Druid Spell Powers
A cleric or druid who has lost the ability to cast spells by incurring the anger of his or her deity may regain that ability by seeking atonement from another cleric or paladin of the same deity or another druid of the same circle.Redemption or Temptation
You may cast this spell upon a creature of an opposing alignment in order to offer it a chance to change its alignment to match yours. The prospective target must be present for the entire casting process. Upon completion of the spell, the target freely chooses whether it retains its original alignment or acquiesces to your offer and changes to your alignment. No duress, compulsion, or magical influence can force the target to take advantage of the opportunity offered if it is unwilling to abandon its old alignment. This use of the spell does not work on Celestials, Fiends, or any creature incapable of changing its alignment naturally. Note: Normally, changing alignment is up to the player. This use of atonment simply offers a believable way for a character to change his or her alignment drastically, suddenly, and definitively. This is a rare option
This option requires special permission to take. In the case of spells, psionic powers, and similar options, this option must be found in the world and cannot be taken upon level-up.
