Miko Tanner's life began ordinarily enough in the frontier city of Estergord on a distant world. She spent her childhood days learning of commerce and history and preparing to take over her family's distribution business, but as is typical of halfling children her nights were spent absorbing tales of her father's adventures and stoking her own wonderlust. Her life was turned around in an instant when her mother was lost at sea, and on the same year her father never returned from a quest to find the Echo of Helenia's Hope. The orphaned halfling girl was taken to the Guild Hall under the protection of her uncle, Charles Penrose, and godfather Breac Sunfist.
She quickly became something of a specialist at blending into the heavy crowds of merchant squares and town bazaars. Seemingly at will she could capture the attention of all nearby with her trademark pink hair, then just as quickly disappear behind everyone's legs, never to be seen again. Within the hall, she was gregarious and her babbling conversation became a familiar sound within the tavern. Outside the hall she was quickly becoming a dependable and cunning agent and was developing something of a reputation as a treasure hunter. She held an odd facination with the surrounding world of Elanora, on which the Guild Hall sat but within which most guild members never ventured. Some scattered records not destroyed by Nathrael show several disciplinery actions taken against Miko when she 'borrowed' guild resources to help a local neighbour with their troubles, resources that had been marked to be used to fight an illithid invasion off-world.
Then the enchanter known as Whisper attacked the guild hall and killed Charles Penrose. Worse, Penrose was removed from existence itself, removing all memory of his identity, his name and face from everyone - even his closest friends and family. Whisper in turn would be hunted down and killed by a group of guild agents led by Sunfist the following week. Before Miko could even begin to get her life back in order, Guildfall occured.
Miko is hardly the only member of the guild still emotionally reeling from the tragedy of Nathrael's assault. But she is a much more reserved and withdrawn woman than the flighty teenage halfling with the blazing pink hair most surviving guild members recall scampering under their feet in the guild tavern. It remains to be seen if she will continue to bind her fortunes to a place that still carries so many painful memories for her. For good or ill though, her fortunes now appear bound to the Tower of the Magi - a glowing blue square has appeared on her skin at the back of her neck.
The War of the Seeds
The war would be both tragic and transformative for the young halfling. Her friendship with the minotaur Mylmar would have far reaching concequences. She sold her soul to Asmodeus to protect the world against some of the worst excesses of her friend's impulses, while then reconciling with Mylmar to discover the dark secret at the heart of the Rotwood Conclave. Her plight would drive Mylmar and their fellow adventurers to destroy Tokmor and its corrupt High Council, which would eventually grant the guild the services of Testra Talonsby. And her feud with her cousin, Jaspier Penrose, would eventually result in the death of Breac Sunfist, and then Jaspier himself.
During this time , she would grow under Wintergreen's guidence to become a natural leader and beloved hero, and was eventually promoted to Spymaster.
The Imperium War
Miko Tanner was a central figure in the struggles against the Sunfist Imperium from a neighboring World Tree. Her counterpart from that tree, Empress Miko 'Sunfist', conquered most of the known multiverse while Tanner worked tirelessly to understand the Imperium and their goals. This understanding would prove crucial, as eventually Tanner would use the Empress' own desires and blind hubris against her, luring the Imperium into a disasterous military defeat at Rhymanthiin City, and then ambushing the Empress at her own guild hall on the distant world of Aronale.
The official record states that she died in the battle of Rhymanthiin. But as Madame Burfoot, she continued to surve as Spymaster. More than any other single individual, she is responsible for inspiring the Little Warriors into securing true peace in their time.
