Raw Halite Crystals
Raw halite crystals are an impure, unrefined form of salt which, though they may look safe to eat, are very much not meant for consumption. In the Wonderlandian city of Saltgate, this has caused numerous health problems over the years—particularly amongst the youth of The Hex. The kids who live in that neighborhood are used to stealing handfuls of sea salt from piles down the shore, but when they decide to take their hi-jinx up into the neighborhoods that mine their salt instead, accidents will and have happened.
When consumed raw, the same salt crystals which one might use to season a meal can cause nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and abdominal cramping.
Campaign for Salt Safety
After one child from The Hex was hospitalized for several days, the citizens of Saltgate petitioned the king for permission to begin a postering campaign around Cliffside and its mines. This they were granted almost immediately. Trouble was that a group of conspiracy theorists from The Hex decided the campaign was simply an attempt by Cliffside refineries to require that all salt, even the sea salt produced in The Hex, would need to be refined going forward.
Only when the king made an address to the city were the conspiracists satisfied.
The second problem with the campaign was that the slogans were universally laughed at by the kids they were meant to intimidate. For a good long while, no one was sure if the campaign was going to work at all. Only when research indicated that the number of incidents had plummeted over the course of six weeks—only then did the committee behind the campaign consider it a success.
Kids interviewed later admitted that the dumb slogans were the reason they stopped their salt pilfering up by the mines. They figured that if there wasn’t a threat—if it was all a lie—then the committee would have tried harder and come up with better catch phrases.
