Ostké Liberation Front

The Ostké Liberation Front (OLF) was a resistance movement which opposed the rule of the Empire of Oz over the subcontinent of Ostké. It was secretly bankrolled by Locasta Lanékín and Glinda Hamilton—the Witches of the North and South, respectively.

Though beloved by many, the methods employed by the OLF were considered questionable by others. The ultimate goal of toppling the Empire and restoring the government of United Countries was something that nearly everyone could agree on, but the OLF’s extreme tactics remain divisive to this day.

History

Though protests against the rule of Oscar Diggs were a regular occurrence from the start, armed insurgencies in Oz were rare for the first 35 years of the Empire. The war chest Diggs had established during the Invasion in 142 was vast and yet to be depleted, and public opinion in Eden was still firmly against the halflings who were at the heart of these early rebellions.

By 177, however, many Edenians had begun to understand that Diggs had hoodwinked them all. The halflings were not the bad guys here. And so, interested parties from outside of Oz began to look for ways to support the rebels. Late that year, in the Nunyan border city of Chelmsdale, a meeting of these interested parties met with two hooded figures who came to represent the insurgents—two figures entirely too tall to be halflings themselves. After some careful vetting, the two figures returned to Oz and the activities of the OLF began in earnest.

Notable Attacks

Among the many attacks which the OLF has taken credit for over the years, the following are considered the most infamous:

    • The bombing of the Bridge Over the River Quad, a river crossing between the Emerald City and the oft-rebellious Quadling Country
    • The robbery of The First Imperial Bank of Oz, which would fund the rebellion for over a decade but which would plunge the empire into a deep recession
    • An assassination attempt on the Emperor during the Yellow Brick Race which resulted in a riot and over a hundred casualties
    • The liberation of a halfling internment camp in Winkie Country which led to the release of thousands of innocent citizens and the dissolution of the so-called “reservation” system in the Empire, but which also led to the escape of several dozen hardened criminals

Other activities included numerous blockades, the regular theft of imperial military equipment, and a popular pirate radio broadcast which eviscerated Oscar Diggs on the daily.

Yeah, I was reading some Andor lore on Wookieepedia to get myself inspired for this one. Love that show!

Kind of reminds me of how the suffragettes are seen today, their methods condemned even though the cause was just.   What happened to them? I noticed you used the past tense.

It should maybe be in the present tense. I think I need to do an overhaul where I look at which tense I'm using throughout the site. Present makes the most sense, but I do think I slip into past for some articles—as if they're being written from the viewpoint of someone long after the events.   At any rate, to answer your question: they're still around during the time of the comic book and I don't exactly know what's happening to them next. A very unsatisfying answer, I know!
