Chronicler

Command the Spotlight with Moxie and Trick Shots

Chroniclers are Rogues who understand that reputation is a weapon. They win fights with a grin, a perfectly-timed quip, and a bolt placed where the story demands—pinning a foe in place, blinding them for a beat, or sending panic through the line.   A Chronicler’s Signature Repeater is part trophy, part tool, part calling card—always named, always “improved,” and always ready for an encore when the moment turns cinematic. Their Moxie isn’t magic; it’s stagecraft: drawing eyes, breaking focus, and setting allies up for the clean strike.   You’ll find Chroniclers in courts and caravans, guildhalls and dockside taverns—anywhere secrets travel faster than coin. Some sell their talents as charming investigators or celebrated pamphleteers. Others run with whisper-networks and contract brokers, shaping what witnesses saw and what powerful people want remembered.   A Chronicler doesn’t just survive the night. They make sure everyone remembers it their way.

Level 3: Chronicler’s Swagger

Your confidence propels you into danger with impeccable timing. You gain a bonus to your initiative rolls equal to your Charisma modifier.   In addition, you can use your Sneak Attack against a creature you hit with your Signature Repeater even if you don’t have Advantage on the attack roll, provided that you don’t have Disadvantage on the roll and no other creatures are within 5 feet of you or your target. All other rules for Sneak Attack still apply to you.

Level 3: Moxie

You weaponize confidence, timing, and crowd control. You have a pool of Moxie equal to your Proficiency Bonus + your Charisma modifier (minimum 1). You regain one of your expended Moxie when you finish a Short Rest, and you regain all of them when you finish a Long Rest.   Rapid Banter. As a Bonus Action, you can expend 1 Moxie and choose one creature within 30 feet of you that can hear you and understands at least one language. You make a Charisma skill check of your choice contested by the target’s Wisdom (Insight) check. On a failure, the target is Distracted until the start of its next turn, and you have Advantage on the next attack roll you make against it before the end of the current turn.   Trick Bolt. Once per turn, immediately after you hit a creature with an attack using your Signature Repeater, you can expend 1 Moxie to twist the shot into a disabling flourish (no action required). Choose one of the below Trick Bolt effects. The target must make a saving throw, DC equals 8 plus your Dexterity modifier and Proficiency Bonus, or suffer the effects of the chosen Trick Bolt.
  • Pinning Bolt (Strength). On a failed save, the target has the Slowed condition until the start of your next turn.
  • Flashpowder Bolt (Constitution). On a failed save, the target has the Blinded condition until the start of your next turn.
  • Rattle Bolt (Wisdom). On a failed save, the target is Frightened of you until the start of your next turn.
Working the Room. As a Bonus Action, you can expend 1 Moxie to take the Influence Action.

Level 3: Signature Repeater

You maintain a personalized repeating crossbow—named, notorious, and endlessly “improved.” Choose one hand crossbow or light crossbow you own. It becomes your Signature Repeater. Your Signature Repeater ignores the Loading property. If you lose it, you can rebuild it during a Long Rest with 50 gp of materials, or by salvaging two equivalent crossbows.   You also gain proficiency with Heavy Crossbows, Tinker’s Tools, and Calligrapher’s Supplies.

Level 9: Double Feature

When you land the perfect shot, you’re already chambering the encore. On your turn, if you hit a creature with an attack using your Signature Repeater and you apply your Sneak Attack to that attack, you can expend 1 Moxie to make one additional attack with your Signature Repeater as a Bonus Action.   If the Bonus Action attack hits and you meet all the requirements to apply your Sneak Attack to it, the attack can deal Sneak Attack damage again, but only half of your normal Sneak Attack dice (rounded down), to a maximum number of dice equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1). You can’t use any Cunning Strike or Devious Strikes options with this additional Sneak Attack damage.

Level 13: Spotlight Maneuvers

You control the scene—smoke, timing, and a perfectly-placed cue. You gain the below additional ways to use your Moxie.   Crossfire Callout. When you take the Attack action on your turn and deal Sneak Attack damage to a creature with your Signature Repeater, you can expend 1 Moxie as a Bonus Action on the same turn to direct an opening (no action required). Choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you. That creature can use its Reaction to move up to half its Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks from the creature you hit or make one weapon attack against the creature you hit.   Smoke & Mirrors. As a Bonus Action, you can expend 1 Moxie and choose a point you can see within 30 feet of you. Smoke billows from that point, filling a 10-foot-radius Sphere until the start of your next turn. The Sphere is Heavily Obscured. You can immediately take the Hide Action as part of the same Bonus Action.

Level 17: Cliffhanger Finale

You end the moment with a line nobody forgets. When you deal Sneak Attack damage to a creature with your Signature Repeater, you can force the target to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your Proficiency Bonus + your Charisma modifier). A creature that can’t hear you automatically succeeds on this saving throw. On a failed save, the target is Stunned until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, the target is instead Dazed until the end of its next turn.   Once you use this feature you cannot use it again until you finish a Short or Long Rest.
