Infernal Ceramic
Properties
Material Characteristics
These crimson ceramic plates are lighter than they appear.
Physical & Chemical Properties
These plates, when fully cured, offer unrivaled heat protection and designed to take a beating.
Origin & Source
After experimenting and adding Lacrite, the gnomes tested many different ceramic mixtures until they came across the mixture of this miraculous material.
History & Usage
History
These plates have been used for millennia by the Volognomes.
Everyday use
The most common use is for shielding from heat. Whether on the outer hull of magma ships, or the walls of a well-off noble's home. The second most common use is thermal casings for Planar Copper to counteract its magical properties.
Refinement
Plates are made with a special Lacrite ceramic powder. Once mixed with water, a chemical reaction begins, turning the powder into a viscous liquid. They add thin layers of woven Basalt Fiber inside the form. The mixture is then poured into various molds for different uses. Once in the form, it would take anywhere from a few weeks for smaller, thinner pieces to cure. Larger pieces were known to take in excess of a year.
They eventually started using moisture condensers attached to the forms to pull moisture back out of the mixture, allowing curing to happen in just a matter of days, even on the largest plates.

Reusability & Recycling
Damaged and old plates can be placed in a special crusher that turns it all back into a powder. If it is a newer plate the basalt is seperated out of the ceramic powder before the clay is recycled. Before the reinforcement of the basalt fibers damaged plates would shatter and generally be lost to the floor of the Rocking Sea.
Distribution
Trade & Market
The Volognomes manufacture these plates in Lockgear foundries in standardized sizes and shapes for common items and uses. As well, the Volognomes are happy to manufacture custom pieces that are much more expensive and time-consuming.
Before the invention of Dehumidification, the price of the ceramic was far beyond the reach of all but the most wealthy in the land.
