Undead

Theological Overview

In Draconian theology, death is not a static state but a dynamic judicial transition. The soul is composed of six distinct parts: the physical body and the five parts of the spirit—the Ka (Life Force), Ba (Personality), Wren (Identity), Ib (Conscience/Heart), and Sheut (Shadow). These six components are intended to remain in a specific state of preservation and harmony until the Final Judgment of Osiris.

The creation of undead is primarily an act of reanimating the physical body rather than a direct manipulation of the spirit, with the notable exceptions of the "Accursed" and "Restless" types. This reanimation does not block the spirit’s progression to the Hall of Truth for judgment. Instead, it creates a catastrophic disruption at the end of the divine cycle: it prevents a spirit that has successfully passed the Judgment of Osiris from returning to collect its body. Without this vessel, the spirit cannot complete its transition into its appointed realm in Seket-Hetep. Because the body is the necessary vehicle for this final theological resurrection, and thus a fundamental part of the six-part soul, any state of undeath is viewed as the ultimate theft of a soul's eternal reward.

Classification of the Undead

The Holy Order of Anubis classifies the undead based on the nature of their reanimation and the specific spiritual components entangled in their state.
ClassificationSpirit ComponentNature of Undeath
The Empty (Zombies/Skeletons)NonePurely mechanical animation of the remains. The spirit has departed, leaving an empty vessel moved by external necromantic force. Considered "Theological Theft" of the future resurrection vessel.
The Tethered (Ghouls/Ghasts)The Sheut (Shadow)The shadow is tethered to the reanimated body. Lacking the Wren (Identity), Ib (Conscience), Ba (Personality), or Ka (Life Force), these creatures exist in a state of primal, instinctual hunger with no moral compass. The lack of the Ka specifically means they can only be sustained by external necromantic force.
The Manifest (Ghosts/Spectres)The Ka (Life Force)These are not reanimated bodies, but rather a manifestation of the Ka. They linger as echoes of life force, often tied to locations or objects of significance. Because they lack the Ba (Personality), they are not "people"; they are repetitive emotional loops or environmental echoes devoid of evolving thought or true agency.
The Restless (Wraiths)Ba, Ka, & WrenBorn from a soul unable to find rest due to a violent or unjust death. Driven by a desire for vengeance, the personality and identity remain bound to the life force, haunting the world of the living.
The Accursed (Vampires/Liches)All PartsA state entered to avoid death, binding all six parts of the soul. While Vampirism can be spread through a curse, Lichdom is a solitary, high-ritual act. Both trade the hope of Seket-Hetep for a static, earthly existence.

Legal Status of the Undead

Under the laws of the Holy Orders of Anubis and Osiris, the state of "Undeath" is a Legal Purgatory.
  • The Right to Rest: Every citizen of Draconia is entitled to seek the Judgment of Osiris. The creation of "The Empty" is a crime against the state and the gods, as it desecrates the body—the sixth part of the soul—intended for the journey to Seket-Hetep.
  • Act of Profanity: Turning a person into an undead creature effectively "freezes" the body's availability for the spirit's return. Even if the undead form is later destroyed, the vessel may be considered "profaned," requiring significant divine intervention to restore its viability for resurrection.
  • Asset Forfeiture: Upon being confirmed as "Accursed," most countries in Draconia will classify a person as legally deceased. Their titles, properties, and lineage are immediately transferred to their heirs as if they had passed away naturally. This would also be why vampires and liches might want to hide their undead nature for as long as possible. For Vampires and Liches, this is a permanent severance from society; their legal personhood is extinguished even if their intellect remains.

Causes

Undead are conjured by powerful necromancy.

Treatment

Clerics and Paladins are able to Turn Undead, which doesn't necessarily destroy them, but can repel them. Paladins of Anubis are specially trained to deal with destroying the undead while preserving the bodies.

Prevention

Being buried in an established cemetery can be a good way to prevent the risk of a loved one being turned into the undead. Established cemeteries are guarded by the Paladins of Anubis and enjoy protection from the God of Death himself. Despite these safeguards, many families have private tombs elsewhere that stand at risk of necromancer infiltration.

Cultural Reception

The undead are feared throughout Draconia and the followers of Anubis detest the idea of someone using magic to reanimate the dead without the person's spirit being present.
