The Knights' Code

Draconia has a unified Knights' Code revealed directly from Horus, the God of Nobility and Honor.

The Knights' Code of Horus

The Universal Mandate of the Noble Heart Revealed by the Lord Horus, God of Nobility, Supreme, and War, to the Supreme Strategos, and formally declared revelatory by the Quorum of Eight Warrior Priests during the Era of ADR.

Preamble: The Revelation of True Nobility

Behold, I am Horus, the Shield of the Pantheon and the Sword of Order. I look upon the world and see a multitude of crowns, yet I see few who understand the weight of the head that wears them. Know ye that Nobility is not a liquid found in the blood, nor a shadow cast by a father’s name. It is a garment of the soul, woven by the hands of discipline and worn by the heart of courage.

Every Monarch who rules by the Grace of the Gods shall adopt this Code, for a King without Knights is a sun without rays, and a Knight without Honor is but a butcher in plate-mail. Let no man be barred from this path by the circumstances of his birth, for the Law of Order declared by Ra does not distinguish between the cottage and the palace when it seeks a hero.

I. The Vow of Investiture

This oath is to be administered by the Sovereign or a Priest of Horus. The candidate shall kneel, sword unsheathed and placed before them, and speak these words before the eyes of the people.

"I, [Name], stand before the Sun and the Crown. I pledge my blade to the Law, my breath to my Sovereign, and my soul to the preservation of Order. I shall be the shield for those who cannot bear one, the voice for those who are silenced, and the scourge of those who embrace Chaos. I seek no reward but the honor of the service; I claim no name but the one I carve with my deeds. By the Mandate of Horus, I so swear."

II. The Seven Pillars of the Noble Heart

1. Prowess in the Just Cause

A Knight must be a master of the tools of war. To be weak is to fail the innocent; to be unskilled is to invite Chaos. Yet, strength is a stewardship, not a license. A Knight shall never draw steel against a commoner except in the defense of life or the enforcement of High Law.

2. The Comitatus (The Bond of Loyalty)

The bond between the Knight and the Sovereign is sacred, mirroring the bond between the Gods and the Law. A Knight shall not betray their oath-lord, even unto death. In turn, the Sovereign shall treat their Knight as kin, for the Shield-Bond is stronger than the Blood-Bond.

3. The Merit of the Name

Let it be known across every kingdom that any person—be they son of a peasant or daughter of a prince—who demonstrates the virtues of the Noble Heart may be called to the vigil. Nobility is earned in the crucible of service, not inherited in the cradle of luxury. A Knight’s title is a recognition of what they are, not what their ancestors were.

4. Largesse and Stewardship

A Knight is a reservoir of the world’s bounty. To hoard wealth while the kingdom hungers is to rot from within. A Knight shall be generous to the poor, shall maintain the roads and shrines of their station, and shall ensure that the surplus of the land reaches the mouths of the needy.

5. Courtesy and the Laws of Conduct

A Knight shall speak with the tongue of a diplomat and act with the grace of a scholar. To be a warrior is no excuse for being a churl. Respect shall be rendered to all who walk in Order—to the high for their burden, and to the low for their labor.

6. The Protection of the Sanctuary

A Knight is the perpetual guardian of the weak. Women, children, the elderly, and the clerics of the Pantheon are under the Knight's personal protection. To harm a non-combatant is to forfeit the name of Knight and to face the judgment of the Supreme.

7. The Vigil of Order

A Knight is the living embodiment of Law. They shall not bear false witness, shall not engage in the arts of deceit, and shall never prioritize personal gain over the stability of the Realm. If the Law and the Sovereign conflict, the Knight shall seek the counsel of the High Priests, for the Law of Ra is the foundation of all thrones.

III. The Protocols of Martial Order

  1. Right of Challenge: A Knight may challenge another Knight to single combat to settle a dispute of honor, provided the challenge is witnessed by a herald and does not disrupt the peace of the realm.
  2. Mercy to the Fallen: Once an opponent is disarmed or incapacitated, a Knight shall offer quarter. To kill a defeated foe who seeks mercy is a crime against the portfolio of Nobility.
  3. The Shield of the Stranger: A Knight shall offer hospitality to any traveler who is not an enemy of the state, providing a night’s safety and a meal, for we are all travelers in the eyes of Ptah.

IV. The Sentence of the Degraded

A Knight who breaks this Code shall be brought before a Court of Peers. If found guilty of Cowardice, Treachery, or Cruelty:
  1. Their spurs shall be hacked from their heels.
  2. Their sword shall be broken over their head.
  3. Their name shall be stricken from the Great Ledger.
  4. They shall be cast out to walk the world as a nameless shadow, for they have profaned the Name of Horus.
So it is written. So it is decreed.
