Sending Stones
Arcane Mechanics
The technology is based on a refined and stabilized variant of the Sending spell. While the core spell typically requires the caster to be personally familiar with the recipient, the enchantment within the stones shifts this requirement to the Identity of the stone's twin or the specific Nominal Identity of the holder.- The 25-Word Constant: In accordance with the fundamental laws of the Sending spell, every transmission is strictly limited to 25 words or less. This is a fixed mechanical constraint of the magic; the arcane connection simply terminates once the 25th word is spoken.
- Aural Manifestation: To the recipient, the message sounds like the sender's voice speaking directly into their mind. Most stones vibrate or emit a faint chime when a message is incoming.
- Nominal Addressing: In networked environments (such as a harbor or airport), the address used to initialize the magic (e.g., "Control Tower") acts as the anchor for the spell. This address is part of the spell's targeting phase and does not count toward the 25-word verbal limit.
Utility
Open Networks (Logistics)
The open network is the standard for any organization requiring a decentralized "switchboard" infrastructure. Because the magic follows the individual holder rather than a specific device, it functions as an identity-based relay.
In metropolitan centers, Emergency Dispatch and City Watch commanders use open networks to coordinate patrols; a dispatcher can "call" any guard on shift by name to redirect them to a scene without needing a physical connection to that specific stone. Similarly, Merchant Guilds and Intelligence Networks utilize this to maintain contact with field agents who may frequently lose, break, or trade stones. So long as the agent holds any functional stone and their identity is known to the sender, the link remains viable.
Closed Networks (Security)
A Closed (Paired) Network is utilized when the primary requirements are exclusivity and untraceability. Because these stones are magically tethered, they ignore the general identity-based search of the Æther, creating a private tunnel between two specific stones.- Deep-Cover Espionage: In spycraft, an open-network stone is a liability. If an operative’s identity is known, an enemy could "call" their stone to track or distract them. A paired system allows an agent to communicate exclusively with a specific handler. Since the stone does not respond to a "Nominal Identity" search, the agent remains invisible to the arcane registries used by governments.
- Tactical "Speed-Dial": In high-stress environments, a paired system removes the cognitive load of "anchoring" the spell. The sender does not need to focus on a name to initiate the transmission; they simply speak, and the twin stone receives the message instantly. This is ideal for scenarios where the recipient is always the same person and every second counts.
- Executive Redundancy: High-ranking officials often use a paired set as a direct "hotline" to a specific deputy. This ensures a clear line of communication that cannot be interrupted or "spammed" by outside parties attempting to reach the holder by name on the open network.
Manufacturing
- Materials: Successful stones require minerals with a high receptivity to magic, such as polished obsidian, brass-flecked river stones, or resonant crystals.
- The Logic of the Link: By default, stones are created as "Open" instruments. Because they are identical in manufacture, they are essentially interchangeable. A captain can hand their stone to an officer, and as long as a sender knows that officer's identity, the link remains functional.
- Paired Systems: During the enchantment process, an artificer can specifically Pair two stones to form a closed system. These stones are magically locked to one another and can only communicate with their twin. This is a common request for private security or sensitive diplomatic links.
| Requirement | Preferred System | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Scalability | Open Network | One stone can reach anyone by name. |
| Absolute Privacy | Closed Network | Unreachable by anyone without the twin stone. |
| Ease of Use | Closed Network | Direct link; no need to "name" the recipient. |
| Stealth | Closed Network | Bypasses public registries and identity searches. |
