Easter Eggs

Here's a list of all the easter eggs and references within /dev/null. Read at your own risk; there may be spoilers! This is also an ever-expanding list as more stuff is worldbuilt onto this whole thing.

  • Games

  • The Void is a reference to void in programming, and the out-of-bounds areas at the bottom of maps in video games.
  • The first division / SWAT / special response team of the Aegis Protocol, Division Zero, is named after a game Nulcheck and his friends wanted to make. It also references how, in programming, arrays start counting at zero.
  • The Void Leviathan name was taken from what Nulcheck called the Ghost Leviathans that lived in the Crater Edge (or the void biome), in Subnautica.
  • Echo is a reference to the echo command in batch programming, and Echo from Overwatch.
  • Music

  • deadmau5, i_o, and Daft Punk are referenced as music artists in this world.
  • People

  • Miscellaneous

  • Aegis Protocol agents are sometimes called Sentinels or Guardians, referencing presonnel from the Dragonguard in the Legends of the Dragonguard world.
  • Energetic Flux is this world's version of a "free flowing" natural magic.
  • Mythology

  • Aegis Protocol is sometimes called The Shield, referencing the shield carried by Athena and Zeus.
  • Technology & Computers

  • Null Device and the /dev/null world is named after the real Null Device on computers (sometimes referred to as /dev/null).
  • The Nexus is sometimes called the "Ether" or "Ethernet", symbolizing the connection between everything.
  • Systerra is a combination of System and Terra.
  • The Void is a reference to void in programming, and the out-of-bounds areas at the bottom of maps in video games.
  • main_city and city_1 names are stylized like temporary test file names.
  • Districts in cities are called partitions, referencing disk partitions on a hard drive.
  • Construct and other organisms' scientific naming is structured like object-oriented programming classes.
  • Static Construct is named after static methods in programming.
  • Bitwise Shifter and Bitwise Operation are named after and inspired by bit-shift operation in computing.
  • Ana Logue is named after analog, and "speaks" a different language than the rest of the Constructs, kind of like the difference between analog and digital signals.
  • Ana Logue's ability to manipulate bits references the fact that computers use analog signals to manipulate bits on a disk drive.
  • Dac, Ana Logue's translator, is named after Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), which converts digital signals to analog for audio or visual devices.
  • Echo is a reference to the echo command in batch programming, and Echo from Overwatch.
  • Bugs and their different types are references to computer bugs and glitches in programming.
  • Null Pointer Exception condition is directly named after the null-pointer exception in programming, usually resulting in the program crashing.
