Ore Lamp
"This should keep you company on your journey. Hopefully, it stays warm."
In the decade just after the Ice Age, people in the New World used ore lamps while they were travelling through the continent. The world was still very cold then, so ways to keep warm were needed for those who were not used to the biting cold. Ore lamps are small, handheld lamps that can absorb Pyro and release it as heat, warming the holder and their surroundings.
When a person was out travelling, other travellers would pass their lamp to them if they had a spare, and those with Pyro powers would even heat it up for the other traveller. This was their way of greeting and connecting with new people, while also lending them a helping hand.
Usage
There are different types of ore lamp, but they all hold some ore inside which resonates with Pyro or any kind of heat. Once in contact with fire or heat, the ore inside will heat up and then release the heat slowly. Once the heat has cooled off, the ore lamp can be reheated again after waiting a few minutes. Dipping it in cold water will also extinguish the heat quickly.Depending on its shape, ore lamps can also be attached to many things to function as a torch. It was often attached to staffs or bags as people travelled. While it is heating up, the ore inside will also shine bright and light the area.
Symbolism
Although the ice has now melted, this tradition is still kept in many parts of the New World. In the south, ore lamps are said to represent the warmth of the previous holder, and so passing one on is like passing the kindness onto another person. As the ore within burns bright, the kindness of the previous holder does too. When this tradition was brought to the Known World, people said that it carried the hopes and dreams of the traveller. As long as the lamp remained lit, then their dreams would never get lost in the snow, but instead light the way.
