Haunting Wails Tavern
From the outside, this tavern has dark aura to it. The two torches lighting the front door and sign provide little illumination for its mossy façade. The interior is very much the same. The stone walls extend about a meter up from the ground. Wood paneling frames the rest. The interior feels dark like there are secrets hiding in every corner. As such the tavern’s patrons naturally retain a whispered tone to their conversation. Some find it romantic and cozy. Others find it a little grim, but the price usually beats out other taverns and inns, so the Haunting Wails tavern stays busy.
The most notable of features here is the large collection of brass and lead pipes from an old pipe organ behind the bar. The ceiling here extends far beyond the 9’ one that makes up the rest of the tavern area. These pipes make up the inn’s namesake because that section of the tavern is in disrepair. When the wind blows, a draft can run over or through these pipes, causing them to ring. Sometimes they make harmonized chords and sound quite sweet. Other times, it’s chillingly discordant. “It all depends on the wind,” says Erdred, the owner of this wayward tavern.
Erdred (AIR-drid) is a dwarven woman with brunette hair french braided into two big braids that then extend halfway down her back. She has a curt nature but is very generous and hospitable to her guests. Erdred’s son, Grodwil (GRAWD-wil) is the cook and loves to try new things. The food isn’t necessarily consistent, but sometimes he makes some great food. He’s always interested to buy ingredients from other places, especially vinegars and oils.
