Lycanthropy

Lycanthropy was a condition, disease or curse that caused humanoids and giants to change form, usually into hybrid humanoid-animal states.

Transmission & Vectors

Injury (bite usually) is the most common agent of transmitted. However, it is hereditary as well. There are also induced methods from magical items or a curse as a result of a spell.

Symptoms

The full moon causes an involuntary transformation into animal form.

Treatment

A cleric or wizard is able to use a few spells to remove the condition, such as; Remove Curse or Break Enchantment. There is another method involving making a potion with Belladonna then this can also be a cure for lycanthropy. However, this is a toxic herb that can physically weaken the person taking it and there is a chance of falling into a state of death-like sleep. Some rumours say that just eating a sprig of belladonna is eaten within an hour of contracting the condition, there is a chance of the condition not taking hold, while others say a potion needs to be made.

Prognosis

Outside the full moon the afflicted can live normal lives. However, due to the stereotypes surrounding being a were-person causes society to shun the individual or hunt them down. As a result many embrace their condition and use their hybrid form to defend themselves.

History

Some said that thousands of years ago, the god Azari used barbaric human tribes to create the original lycanthropes, providing them with qualities of the predatory animals they admired. Others said it was a blessing from Vorynn to a group of young human orphans to help them survive in the dangerous wilds. Either way, these ancient bloodlines were passed down through generations.

Cultural Reception

The afflicted are feared and ostracized, causing many who are afflicted to become more secretive. Either out of shame or to conceal their gift.
