Personal history
Known to some as ‘The Pancake Queen’, Rani grew up in the hostel that her mother owns and runs near The Railyard in Bathala City. Her father had sadly passed away when Rani was only 5 years old, and while the rest of the family did support them, it often felt like it was just her and her mother against the world.
At age 12, Rani reached out to a moody-looking teenager who rented a room in the hostel for a while, breaking the ice with a stack of syrup-laden pancakes. There was something about the teen that intrigued Rani, and she was ecstatic when they asked to make pancakes together with her sometime.
Shortly after her thirteenth birthday, Rani found herself kidnapped by her maths teacher. She was thankfully rescued by Blue and Rue before she could be sold on, the latter revealing their powers to Rani in the process and opening up about their past as well as their current employment for The Spider. The whole ordeal left Rani shaken, and the subsequent years saw her going to a therapist to work through her feelings of mistrust and personal betrayal.
From a young age, Rani was more interested in creative endeavours than academic achievements and she was frequently caught doodling in class instead of taking notes. Throughout her teenage years, Rani’s artistic tendencies further developed and started to get recognised by her therapist, who encouraged her to experiment with various mediums and styles, especially when it seemed to help her process her trauma. In doing so, she discovered a particular talent for lino prints, her skills gaining her the ‘Young Artists - Ages 16-21’ award in the Bathala Art Gallery’s yearly competition.
With her mother’s support, Rani applied for the Art History course at the University of Bathala. She continues to create lino prints on the side (and has successfully sold a bunch of the prints online, her most popular print being a still life featuring a stack of pancakes and a generous breakfast spread entitled ‘Sweet Mornings’), but despite the more academic nature of the course, she is thoroughly enjoying her studies.
