Soren Dregovic
Soren Dregovic
Freelance Mercenary Commander
Former Corporate Security Operative
Overview
Soren Dregovic is the kind of man people warn others about in quiet voices.
Where men like Jasha Rell operate under a code, Soren has none. He does not believe in loyalty beyond convenience, and he does not consider morality relevant to survival. His reputation is built on results, not restraint.
Soren currently leads a small but highly capable freelance mercenary unit operating in and around Chendiuria. Their specialty is deniable operations: surveillance, targeted killings, asset recovery, and intimidation.
Unlike many off-worlders, Soren thrives on Chendiuria. His body has been heavily augmented, allowing him to handle the planet’s gravity and heat far better than most immigrants.
At forty-five, he is considered young by the standards of long-lived augmented humans. But he has already accumulated a career’s worth of enemies.
Origins
Soren was born in Orcus Patera City on Mars, one of the most notorious slum districts on the planet. Orcus Patera lies within a massive volcanic caldera in the eastern hemisphere of Mars and is known for its dense population, heavy industry, and sprawling lower districts.
The slums where Soren grew up were crowded vertical warrens of cheap hab modules stacked above abandoned industrial tunnels.
Crime was routine.
So was violence.
Soren’s parents were never part of his life for long. His mother worked intermittently in factory assembly lines. His father was rumored to have died in a labor riot.
By age twelve, Soren was already stealing cargo shipments from industrial rail platforms.
By sixteen, he was running courier jobs for smuggling crews.
Early Criminal Life
Soren’s early survival depended on speed, observation, and luck.
He ran petty criminal operations including:
cargo theft
industrial component smuggling
black-market electronics resale
He was not especially strong, but he was observant. He developed an instinct for identifying weaknesses in security patterns.
One such observation changed his life.
Joining Corporate Security
During a failed theft attempt at a corporate logistics hub, Soren was captured by a private security unit belonging to Helios Industrial Defense, a mid-tier Martian corporate security company.
Instead of killing him or turning him over to city authorities, the unit commander made a different decision.
They recruited him.
Helios often pulled promising criminals from the slums because they understood the mentality of thieves and smugglers.
Soren started at the very bottom as a security auxiliary.
His first assignments were simple:
facility patrol
equipment transport
surveillance monitoring
He excelled immediately.
Rise Through the Company
Soren quickly developed a reputation inside Helios Defense.
He was ruthless.
But he was effective.
Within ten years he advanced through several roles:
security technician
tactical response operator
counter-infiltration specialist
He also began augmenting himself.
Unlike military-grade augment programs, Soren’s upgrades came from artisan cyberdocs scattered across Mars’ underground augmentation scene.
Each upgrade was paid for with bonuses and side work.
Known Augmentations
Soren’s body now contains extensive cybernetic enhancements.
Reinforced skeletal lattice
High-density muscle fiber replacement
Enhanced thermoregulation implants
Expanded cardiovascular and respiratory capacity
Integrated neural reflex accelerator
His eyes have also been replaced with multi-spectrum targeting optics, giving him exceptional long-distance accuracy.
These augmentations allow him to function comfortably in Chendiuria’s higher gravity and extreme heat.
They also make him dangerous.
Height: 191 cm
His height is partly natural and partly the result of skeletal reinforcement and spinal extension implants installed during later augment procedures. The reinforcement allows him to comfortably operate heavy equipment and maintain stability under Chendiuria’s gravity.
Weight: 112 kg
Most of this mass is dense augmented muscle fiber and internal reinforcement lattice rather than fat. His skeletal structure has been replaced in several key load-bearing areas with carbon-titanium composite rods and joint anchors, increasing both durability and strength.
Without his augments he would likely weigh closer to 90 kg.
Optic Eye Color
His natural eyes were removed and replaced with a paired tactical optic system.
Right Eye
Deep amber-gold lens with faint rotating aperture rings visible when it focuses. This eye houses the long-range targeting suite and ballistic prediction overlays.
Left Eye
Cold ice-blue lens with a faint hexagonal pattern visible beneath the surface. This eye handles multispectrum scanning including thermal, infrared, and low-light amplification.
When both optics activate simultaneously, the lenses brighten slightly, giving his gaze an unsettling mechanical intensity.
Additional physical notes
Hair: dark brown, usually worn short and utilitarian
Skin tone: pale olive typical of Martian slum populations
Build: long-limbed and narrow-waisted with heavy shoulder structure
Movement: extremely controlled and economical, typical of trained snipers
People who meet Soren often remark on one thing:
He almost never blinks.
That is because the optics do not need to.
Early Combat Work
Helios eventually moved Soren into tactical operations.
His missions included:
corporate espionage
executive protection
facility assault teams
It was during these operations that Soren discovered his greatest strength.
Patience.
He became a sniper.
Soren could remain motionless for hours, waiting for the exact moment a target became vulnerable.
Corporate Coup Attempt
The event that forced Soren off Mars occurred during what later became known as the Helios Incident.
Several senior Helios executives attempted a hostile takeover of the company, backed by rival investors and off-world capital.
The coup failed.
Security forces loyal to the existing leadership crushed the rebellion.
Soren had been hired to eliminate several key executives supporting the takeover.
When the coup collapsed, those actions became liabilities.
Rather than face prosecution or assassination, Soren fled Mars.
He left behind multiple warrants and at least one corporate death contract.
Flight to Chendiuria
Chendiuria was the perfect refuge.
The planet’s chaotic Lower Sprawl and sprawling industrial zones made it easy for someone with Soren’s skills to disappear.
Unlike many immigrants, Soren arrived fully prepared.
His augmentations allowed him to tolerate Chendiuria’s gravity without a belt or support rig.
The heat still affects him, but far less than most off-worlders.
Formation of the Mercenary Team
After several years of freelance work, Soren assembled a small mercenary unit.
The team specializes in:
surveillance operations
long-range assassination
asset recovery
industrial sabotage
Their equipment is a mixture of military surplus and black-market modifications.
Soren personally handles long-range engagements.
Reputation
Soren’s reputation is built on two qualities.
Precision.
And absence of hesitation.
Unlike more principled operators, Soren does not negotiate once he has accepted a contract.
Targets die.
Collateral damage is acceptable if necessary.
Known Actions
Soren is believed to be responsible for multiple high-profile killings across The Lower Sprawl.
Among them is the sniper shot that killed Shou Rata.
During that same engagement, Soren fired at Aditi "Adi" Nizhóní Peshlakai, marking the first time their paths crossed directly.
Surveillance Methods
Soren relies heavily on autonomous reconnaissance.
His preferred system is a small eight-legged drone roughly the size of a lizard.
The drone moves like a mechanical insect, capable of crawling across walls, ceilings, and rough surfaces.
It also possesses short-duration flight capability using a micro thruster fueled by a xenon tank.
This drone allows Soren to track targets without exposing himself.
In one instance, the drone remained attached to Adi without detection even after she destroyed a separate stealth drone deployed by Markus Kane.
Current Status
Soren is currently operating on Chendiuria under contract with a powerful corporate patron.
This patron has taken a particular interest in Adi.
From a concealed observation point, Soren has already watched her movements, including her entry into Rena’s home.
He is patient.
And he is waiting for the right moment to strike.
